Among all boxing counsel that can be heard, the most valuable is given by experienced trainers, especially about championship matches. As many fans remember, the current trainer and the uncle of the ex-champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. recently advocated for Vergil Ortiz Jr. After the recent fight, Mayweather has pretty much urged Ortiz Jr. and Terence Crawford, the current holder of the WBA belt in the 154-pound division, not to fight.

Vergil Ortiz Jr.’s Recent Performance

Last Saturday night, Jeff Mayweather sat at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, watching Vergil Ortiz Jr. fight WBC interim junior middleweight champion Serhii Bohachuk. However the match was a rather close one, Mayweather thought that he, who has an unblemished record of 22-0 with 21 of those knockouts, had lost the match. The decision went to him though most of the spectators would not have guessed, the judges split the vote to give him the twelve-round majority decision that drew controversy.

Mayweather did not spare his criticism of Vergil Ortiz Jr. as follows. He also noted that he had absorbed a lot of shots from Bohachuk, he is a massive hitter with the reputation of wanting the KO. Mayweather’s assessment of Ortiz is that he will not get a full recovery from the punishment he took in that fight.

The Case Against a Fight with Terence Crawford

Jeff Mayweather prefers Vergil Ortiz Jr. not to fight Terence Crawford because it could affect future matchups. Mayweather believes that the outcome of such a fight might complicate or limit his options for future big fights. According to him, fighting Terence Crawford would be considered disadvantageous. Crawford, who boasts of a record of 41-0, 31 knockouts, is one of the most talented fighters in the welterweight division. Mayweather estimated that Crawford was much better than him. In the fight between him and Crawford, he will certainly gain dominance over Ortiz.

Mayweather advises Ortiz to make a docket with Bohachuk for the second time. Since the fight was declared a draw, replays present Vergil Ortiz Jr. with the opportunity to establish a clear victory over him and at the same time undo any flaw that may have been exposed during the first fight.

Terence Crawford’s Recent Fight and Performance Concerns

Jeff Mayweather also focused on the recent fight of Terence Crawford against WBA Junior Middleweight Champion Israil Madrimov on August 3rd. Mayweather noted that Crawford was not as proactive and elusive as he was in his previous fights. He conjectured that Crawford may have been wary of the power that Madrimov possessed and was not sure whether Crawford had felt the might of Madrimov, which must have been known to him only theoretically. Mayweather thinks that Crawford was not at his best against Madrimov, which may prompt questions about what he will do against him when the latter is prepared.

Therefore, the recommendations given by Jeff Mayweather do stress some key factors to be taken into account as a fighter’s career is being built. Even though Vergil Ortiz Jr. is also a talented emergent and Mayweather’s protege, it is clear that the second fight with Bohachuk will be wiser than the immediate fight with Terence Crawford. Despite any problems that emerged from his last fight, he has to strategize his career progression and learn from them to do well against other champions.
