Joe Calzaghe did what most fighters dream of doing. He dominated his era and retired undefeated. “The Pride of Wales” enjoyed an impressive amateur career, winning many titles and amassing a record of 110–10. His journey in professional boxing was a gradual one, but it finished in memorable fashion. Speaking to Darren Barker at First Round TV, Calzaghe (46-0, 32 KOs) spoke about how he thinks he’d fared against Canelo Alvarez.
The career of Canelo Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs) has been full of high points and minimal low ones being his rare defeats against elite fighters such as Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol. At the age of 35, Alvarez is still at the top of the super middleweight division as the current undisputed champion, ahead of his huge clash on Netflix against Terence Crawford on September 13.
The career of Calzaghe was a slowburner, until he defeated Chris Eubank Sr. That win gave him the vacant WBO super middleweight title and catapulted him to the top table in boxing, a position he would never give up. The Welshman finished his career in the best way, defeating Mikkel Kessler, Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr.
Talking to Darren Barker at First Round TV, Calzaghe was asked what his game plan would have been against Canelo: “I think my style would be all wrong for him. You know fast hands, southpaw. You know, unpredictable combination puncher. Too much for him.
“I think if you look at the way Bivol beat him. Bivol, you know really top fighter, Bivol. But he doesn’t have the same work rate, but he has a good in-and-out movement. Fast, you know, in and out, combinations, variation, uppercut, body shots,” said Calzaghe.
