One man’s loss truly became another man’s opportunity. After Janibek Alimkhanuly tested positive for the banned substance Meldonium, forcing Tuesday’s cancellation of his planned title unification bout with Erislandy Lara, the WBA middleweight champion will now face late-replacement contender Johan Gonzalez on Saturday night in San Antonio.

The matchup headlines a dramatic turn of events that salvages Lara’s return to the ring while presenting Gonzalez with the biggest opportunity of his career—one he accepted on mere days’ notice. The fight will take place at the Frost Bank Center as part of the PBC on Prime Video PPV card headlined by Isaac Cruz vs. Lamont Roach Jr. Gonzalez (36-4, 34 KOs), a heavy-handed Venezuelan contender, received the call just six days before fight night, but says the short notice won’t shake his confidence.

“This is absolutely a dream come true,” Gonzalez said Thursday. “I found out six days ago… Now I am here to win and take the world title. I know I can do it.”

Johan Gonzalez enters the bout fresh off a split-decision victory over former unified champion Jarrett Hurd in March, a win that restored some momentum at 160 pounds. Still, his recent form includes alternating victories and losses across his last four bouts, with setbacks to Yoenis Tellez and Jesus Ramos.

Despite the volatility, Gonzalez believes his readiness and power make him a live threat.

“My fundamentals and my hunger will make the difference,” he said. “I’m here to shock the world.”

Lara Furious Over Janibek’s Failed Test but Ready to “Show Up and Show Out”

At 42, Lara (31-3-3, 19 KOs) is the oldest current world champion in boxing and was aiming for a meaningful middleweight title unification. Instead, he finds himself defending against a new opponent after Alimkhanuly ten years younger was pulled due to a failed VADA test. Lara didn’t hide his frustration.

“I’m not even gonna mention that guy’s name cause he doesn’t deserve it,” Lara said Wednesday. “I’m just focused on fighting, no matter who the opponent is.”

Despite the disappointment, Lara stressed that staying active matters most.

“I’m glad to be on this big card. We’re gonna go out there prepared… I’m going to show up and show out.”

Lara remains unbeaten since 2019, riding a seven-fight unbeaten streak that includes stoppage wins over Thomas LaManna, Gary O’Sullivan, Michael Zerafa, and a dominant victory against Danny Garcia last September.

A Replacement Opponent but Not a Soft Touch

Johan Gonzalez brings significant punching power 34 knockouts in 36 wins and a sense of urgency that fits the moment. His recent victory over Hurd connects him indirectly to Lara’s own rivalry with the former 154-pound champion: Hurd beat Lara by split decision in their 2018 classic.

That shared history isn’t lost on Gonzalez, who believes destiny is aligning.

“On Saturday, it will be a new feeling to become world champion,” Gonzalez said.
