Matchroom Boxing’s Frank Smith has silenced mounting speculation that Anthony Joshua would face Dillian Whyte later this year.

The talk intensified after Joshua shared footage of his return to camp, but Smith emphasized that Matchroom’s immediate focus is on Joshua’s health. Joshua’s career was paused following a fatal car accident in Lagos, Nigeria, on December 29, 2025. The crash tragically claimed the lives of his close friends, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Matchroom is tentatively eyeing a July or August 2026 return, but Smith clarified that an opponent will only be selected once they are satisfied with Joshua’s condition.

Despite the delay in a fight announcement, Joshua’s technical evolution has taken a fascinating turn in Spain. He is currently training under the guidance of Iegor Golub, a coach from the setup of his former rival, Oleksandr Usyk.

The Rematch

The unified champion has been present during sessions, offering advice on technical details and discipline—a rare alliance between the division’s top stars. The partnership aims to refine Joshua’s ring craft and mental toughness as he prepares for the final stage of his career, which many hope will eventually include a 2027 clash with Tyson Fury.

“Not really. I mean, I don’t believe so. Anything can happen in boxing, but I don’t believe so. It would be great to get him back out in the summer. But he’s back in full training now. He’s got to be right, he’s got to be prepared and ready,” Smith said
