A judge has issued a temporary restraining order against Vergil Ortiz, barring him from signing with any outside promoters while his contractual battle with Golden Boy Promotions is fixed.

The ruling arrives at a critical moment. Ortiz’s team was reportedly in the final stages of locking in a clash with Jaron Ennis for an April 18 card. The court’s intervention now puts that fight—and Ortiz’s immediate future—in a state of uncertainty. Ortiz’s team argues that a clause allowed Ortiz to walk away if Golden Boy’s exclusive broadcast deal with DAZN expired.

That deal officially ended on December 31, 2025. That resulted in Ortiz’s team filing a lawsuit to end their promotional agreement. Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy stated “active negotiations” are happening for a 2026–2027 renewal with DAZN, which they claim keeps the promotional contract valid through 2027.

“We are aware of the lawsuit. Unfortunately, Vergil is getting bad advice from his lawyer and manager, who have repeatedly violated the contract. We will aggressively defend this lawsuit and enforce our rights. We are confident a judge will agree that our contract is valid and Vergil and his team are in breach,” De La Hoya stated

Ortiz’s Future

Golden Boy also filed a $10 million suit against Ortiz’s manager, Rick Mirigian, accusing him of trying to broker deals with other rival entities. The court accepted Golden Boy’s argument, meaning no deal can be signed until Ortiz’s contractual situation is fixed.

“Unfortunately, Mirigian has embarked on a campaign of self-promotion … in an effort to ingratiate himself with the newest player in the boxing world – Dana White … and Zuffa. In a transparent effort to curry favor with Zuffa, Mirigian has deliberately and willfully interfered with Golden Boy’s contracts for his own personal interest. … He is acting for himself only,” Ricardo P. Cestero (Golden Boy attorney) said

These hurdles have now placed Ortiz in a difficult situation, as the boxer must weigh up where he goes from here.
