Keyshawn Davis (13-0-1, 9 KOs) will soon make his super lightweight debut against Jamaine Ortiz (20-2-1, 10 KOs) on January 31. But will this in turn pave the way for a potential fight against the division’s phenom, Shakur Stevenson ? Davis begs to differ.

During a conversation with Ring Magazine, Davis was asked whether he would end up facing Stevenson. A fight that he does not see ever taking place.

“Look, I’m 26 years old. I see the boxing landscape. I understand Shakur going to be the 140 champ, and that’s ‘my division.’ I feel like boxing is my division. I feel I can really do whatever I want to do. And I know what I want to do after I beat Jamaine, I want to go to 147 and get a 147 title,” he said.

Davis missed weight on June 6 (coming in at around 139.3 lb) and was stripped of his WBO lightweight title. He admitted he has outgrown the 135-lb class. It could be said that he might see 140 as stacked with dangerous opponents, and 147 as a bigger payday and the division where he could land marquee fights.

Meanwhile, Stevenson himself does not want the fight. During an interview, he had said emphatically that he doesn’t want to fight Davis even for big money. This was partly because of their deep personal friendship and mutual respect from their amateur days. In fact, he said a fight would take something like “$500 million” to happen.

At this point, there is a high chance that Richardson Hitchins might end up being Davis’ next opponent, especially with the way the duo has been firing each other up. Moreover, Davis’ words are also hinting at a potential showdown.

“Let me tell ya’ll the plan because I feel like it’s what’s going to happen. After I beat Jamaine Ortiz, God willing, I’m going to go to 147 and become a 147 champion. And then I’m going to defend it against somebody at 147,” he said.

“A New Fire Has Been Lit”

On the other hand, he hasn’t forgotten about his upcoming fight against Ortiz. Davis highlighted that he was reinvigorated for the fight.

A new fire has been lit. I had learned a lot during this layoff, learned a real lot about myself, about the people I was working with, my loved ones, and everything else. So, this is a second chance for me, literally. I’m just blessed to have a second chance, especially off of the layoff, so I’m excited, I’m ready,” he said.
