Lamont Roach Jr. wasted no time turning up the temperature at Wednesday’s press conference, trading verbal jabs with Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz as the pair finalized their December 6 main event at Frost Bank Center (San Antonio, TX). It will be Roach’s third straight fight at a new weight, this time leaping to 140 pounds to face the WBC interim titlist.
One of boxing’s most underrated talkers, the WBA 130-pound champion vowed to make an emphatic statement in unfamiliar territory, declaring he’ll become the first man to knock out Cruz.
Roach’s confidence stems from recent form at higher weights. On March 1 at Barclays Center, he went punch-for-punch with Gervonta Davis, walking away with a controversial majority draw that many observers felt he deserved to win. With Davis opting for a November 14 exhibition against Jake Paul instead of a rematch, Roach says he’s bringing that pent-up frustration to San Antonio.
Cruz, cool as ever, brushed off the chatter as familiar pre-fight theater.
“I’m used to people talking their stuff before they step into the ring and then we see what happens,” Cruz said. “All I can say is I’m gonna show him the same way I showed Rolly.”
That reference cuts deep: in March of last year, Cruz pummeled Rolando Romero across eight rounds until the bout was waved off an emphatic reminder of Pitbull’s pressure-first identity.

Roach: Crafty counterpuncher with tidy footwork, sharp timing, and proven durability at lightweight; seeks to carry his speed and accuracy up to 140.
Cruz: Relentless mid-range mauler who cuts the ring and forces exchanges; thrives when opponents plant their feet and trade.
Expect Roach to aim for angles, pivots, and the check hook to disrupt entries, while Cruz will test Roach’s strength at the new weight with body work and surging combinations.
Weight climb: Can Roach’s pop and pace translate against a natural pressure fighter at 140?
Revenge energy: Roach still stews over the Davis draw; Cruz believes emotion won’t beat pressure.
Statement bout: A decisive win vaults the victor toward full-title stakes and marquee matchups at junior welterweight.
Cruz: “If you talk before the fight, then you’ll see inside the ring that trash talk goes by the wayside. In the end, I’m gonna come out on top.”
Roach: He’s chasing closure after Brooklyn and he plans to find it by being the first to stop Pitbull.
