Leo Atang is a five-time national titlist. He stopped Korean Lee Geon Hui in the first round to obtain gold at the World Boxing Under-19 World Championships in the USA last year.
After signing professional terms with Matchroom Boxing, Atang is now being touted to follow in the footsteps of Anthony Joshua.
"I've had a look at him. He's very good. I've just seen a couple of his amateur bouts. But when you look at guys who you assume can make that transition from top-level amateur to pro, who are the right age, he's one of them. I didn't realize how big he is. Like I thought he would be a cruiserweight and eventually a small heavyweight. But he's 6'5. He looks massive. He's not a small man. He looks like he's one for the future,” said former ex-world champion George Groves during an exclusive interview with the Crowns Gym's Press Insights.
The previous Archbishop Holgate’s pupil will be managed by former World Title-holder Sunny Edwards.
"We put the work in and we put the hours in. I live the life. My mentality is - push myself to the absolute limit and leave no stone unturned.
“I’m fit, I’m strong, and I’ll be ready to go with anyone tomorrow. I’ve got what it takes to go to the top of this sport. The future is here,” said Atang during the signing ceremony.
The 18-year-old, from York, UK, remarked that it was a dream come true for him.
“Leo possesses all of the attributes to make it to the very top, and we can’t wait to get this journey underway,” said Hearn. “Naturally, there was a lot of interest in landing the signature of one of the very best prospects in Britain, and we’re delighted that Leo and his team have chosen us to guide his career,” said Eddie Hearn while signing on Atang.
