In a few days, Tyson Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) will fight it out in a potentially brutal showdown against Arslanbek Makhhmudov (21-2, 19 KOs) at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on April 11. While he is undoubtedly excited for the upcoming fight, there is one opponent that he’d pick over the rest : Anthony Joshua (29-4, 26 KOs).

Speaking at the presser, Fury stated that the fight has been in the books for far too long and that he wished to see it reach fruition soon.

“This fight was supposed to happen so many times over the last 10 years, but then someone has had one more fight in between and someone has got knocked out or injured,” he said. “I think we should get this fight on as soon as possible in case something happens in between. The problem is that in heavyweight boxing anything can go wrong, there are no easy fights. And if you get knocked upside down, it’s finished.”

It can be said that this highly anticipated showdown hasn’t happened yet due to a mix of timing issues, contractual complications, and personal setbacks over several years. In the beginning, negotiations often collapsed over money splits, broadcast deals, and conflicting promotional interests. However, in 2021, a legal ruling forced Fury into a third fight with Deontay Wilder just as a deal with Joshua was close.

Fury then went through retirements and back-to-back losses to Oleksandr Usyk, while Joshua dealt with a volley of injuries, rebuilding fights, and even a serious car accident, following the Jake Paul fight, that delayed his return.

And now with Joshua being matched to potentially fight Wilder, Fury believes that he will be the better choice.

“I want it as the fight next, and I’m sure AJ feels the same. Forget Wilder, the man is a shell of himself. Forget anyone else. Let me get through Saturday, and then we will do the fight before the end of the year,” he said. “I’ve been out of the ring longer than he has, 16 months out of the ring. Let’s do it, let’s dance.”

“I Understand”

But will Joshua be attending Fury’s fight on Saturday? While Fury would love to see his rival in the stands, he wouldn’t hold it against him if he didn’t show up.

“If the man comes, fair play. If he doesn’t, I understand,” he said. “Everyone in life does what they have to do for them. They don’t do it for other people, they do it for themselves, especially in business.”
