Kubrat Pulev claims WBA regular title against Mahmoud Charr in Sofia

Kubrat Pulev (32-3, 14 KOs) claimed the WBA regular title against reigning belt holder Mahmoud Charr (34-5, 20 KOs) in his hometown of Sofia in Bulgaria with a unanimous decision victory. The judges scored the bout: 117-111, 117-111 and 116-112.

The contest, in front of a packed-out Arena Sofia, began with Pulev dabbing his left jab into the face of Charr while also ducking under a wild hook in the opening minute of the first round. Pulev launched two consecutive right hands to the side of Charr’s head in a good opening round for the Bulgarian. Charr would start the quicker of the two in the second round landing a right hook upstairs in the opening seconds. Pulev got back behind his disruptive jab, followed by an overhand right to the head of Charr to gain back some control. However, Charr would finish the round stronger with big shots to the body while attempting to land an uppercut after the combination.

Pulev let his hands go to start round three with a glancing right to the head. Pulev landed more effective headshots with his right hand on the forward marching Charr, but Charr would work the body well as the bell rang. Charr’s body combinations would start the fourth round, but it wouldn’t take long for Pulev to start scoring right-hand headshots as Charr attempted to keep his opponent at bay with his two-shot body combinations. Charr would get cut in the fifth round following another smart right hand from Pulev. The Bulgarian smelt the blood and continued to use his left jab to set up his right hand upstairs. Charr would have some success as he pushed forward with his body work and attempted uppercuts, but it was another round scored for Pulev.

Pulev landed a crushing right hand followed by a right hook thirty seconds into the sixth round. However, Charr continued to pressure. Pulev continued with his disruptive jab while also landing a good body shot with a minute to spare. Pulev would again land two right hands to the head to close the round. The eighth continued with Charr marauding forward onto Pulev’s jab, but it appeared to have little influence on the German’s tactics. The action slowed as Charr avoided a large portion of Pulev’s overhand rights.

The pace severely dipped in the ninth. The referee stepping in twice didn’t help the spectacle. Pulev landed a brilliant triple jab before Charr closed the round with body shot combinations. Little happened in round ten as both men’s energy waned other than a brief back and forth halfway through the round. Round eleven began scrappy, with the pair regularly on each other’s chests. Pulev landed another good headshot with the right hand, followed by a right to the body midway through the round. Pulev began the twelfth and final round with some renewed energy. A right hand to the head and a good body shot landed on Charr close to the final minute mark. The pain traded in the final 20 seconds, with neither landing anything significant.

At 43 years old, Pulev is remarkably now in line for Oleksandr Usyk ’s WBA heavyweight world title, who has a second collision with Tyson Fury in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in two weeks.
