The fact that Edgar Berlanga vs. Hamzah Sheeraz is the main attraction at Turki Alalshikh's event in New York on July 12 has people on X furious. Fans think this bout isn't worthy of a bill full of competitors that are far more skilled than either of these two.
It's interesting that Mike Coppinger did not specify the main event's identity when he announced this stacked card. But now we know that Berlanga-Sheeraz is the card's main attraction.
The main event is Edgar Berlanga vs. Hamzah Sheeraz, William Zepeda vs. Shakur Stevenson in the Co-feature, Subriel Matias vs. Alberto Puello and at risk is Puello's WBC light welterweight title and finally Light heavyweight contenders are Imam Khataev vs. David Morrell
Supporters believe that Turki is favoring Hamzah (21-0-1, 17 KOs) by granting him the coveted title. It's perhaps a more calculated decision because Sheeraz's inclusion as the main act makes UK fans want to buy the event on DAZN PPV. There would be less interest from British fans if Sheeraz was buried on the undercard against Berlanga.
It's also a smart decision on Turki's part to put the New Yorker Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) in the main event since he will attract his Brooklyn fans to watch it or get it on PPV. Although he is well-liked in New York City, Edgar clearly lacks talent and looked awful in his defeat against Canelo Alvarez last September.
Berlanga is also doing a great job portraying the antagonist, and he's not even trying. He seems out of touch with reality and incapable of seeing how unimpressive he is, judging by the way he boasts about himself. Edgar sounds like someone who is experiencing megalomania and isn't grounded when he speaks of himself in such lofty terms. Berlanga will return to reality following a few defeats.
“Berlanga-Sheeraz, per Turki Alalshikh,” said Dan Rafael when asked who the main attraction on the July 12th card in New York would be.
