Manny Pacquiao eyes ‘exciting’ return to boxing with ‘front runner’ world championship fight discussed

Record-setting former world champion Manny Pacquiao still seems to have the boxing world at his feet on the back of his recent return to the ring.

Snapping a four-year professional retirement from the ring earlier this summer, Manny Pacquiao would fight for gold on his return, taking on Mario Barrios in a majority decision draw.

Backed by many in the boxing world to likely have beaten defending WBC welterweight champion Barrios in that comeback, Pacquiao has been branded as a current world champion by the veteran Roy Jones Jr., in fact.

And given the close nature of his fight with Barrios, the Filipino puncher has been included in title discussions once more ahead of a mooted comeback.

Manny Pacquiao eyeing Ryan Garcia, Rolly Romero fights next

Without a title win since his WBA success against Keith Thurman all the way back in 2019, Pacquiao has been linked most notably with a charge for that same title against the incumbent gold holder, Rolly Romero.

Himself picking up that belt against the polarizing Ryan Garcia, Romero would land a unanimous decision win over the Californian in an upset victory earlier this year, too.

And amid links to fights with both Garcia and Romero next, one thing is for sure; Pacquiao is eyeing an “exciting” fight and name in his own comeback.

“Rolly Romero is one of the frontrunners because Manny (Pacquiao) wants meaningful fights, “Sean Gibbons, Pacquiao’s manager, said. “He wants to break his own records and make history, just like when he won the world title at 40 years old.

“…A fight with Ryan Garcia has been discussed but he’s a complicated guy to deal with. It’s not out of the question, but it’s difficult,” Gibbons explained. (H/T Seconds Out)

Manny Pacquiao offered surprise return to Australia

Finishing his career having held the WBA welterweight crown last, Pacquiao infamously lost his WBO crown at the weight class in a wholly controversial defeat against Jeff Horn on enemy territory in Australia.

And amongst the chasing pack hoping to share the ring with Pacquiao in a dream fight is another Australian star in the form of Liam Paro.

Himself returning next month to earn a shot at IBF welterweight gold, Paro has welcomed Pacquiao ‘Down Under’ again in a bid to avenge his loss to his countryman, Horn.

““If I got to share the ring with Manny Pacquiao, it would be a true blessing,” Paro told Code Sports.

“…I’m sure Pacquiao would love to right the wrongs against (Jeff) Horn by beating another Aussie. I’m here waiting for him if he wants it.

“I really do believe I can beat Manny Pacquiao,” Paro explained. “Let’s face it, he is a legend of the sport, but he’s now 46 and he was very good a few weeks ago against (Mario) Barrios.”
