After a retirement that lasted four years (surprisingly long when you take into consideration the recent retirement announcements), Manny Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 KOs) is back to take a shot at the WBC welterweight title, with a showdown against Mario Barrios (29-2-1, 18 KOs) on Saturday night.
With his return around the corner, many have pondered the possibility of him cashing in on the glory of his fight against boxing’s high priest, Floyd Mayweather Jr. Pacquiao recently shared his thoughts on potentially facing Mayweather in a rematch.
In conversation with Sean Zittel, Pacquiao was asked about how he maintained his speed as a fighter at the age of 46.
“Manny Pacquiao is different than others,” he said. And when he was asked if he was in talks with Mayweather for a rematch, he responded without a pause, “Not yet.”
Dubbed as the ‘Battle for Greatness’, the Pacquiao vs Mayweather unified welterweight showdown was one of the most anticipated fights of that time. While Mayweather won the fight via unanimous decision, boxing fans were left aching for more, with many believing that Pacquiao should have been the victor.
However, now almost 10 years down the line, it certainly might not be a fight that fans might consider an interesting affair. While their ages can be overlooked, Mayweather’s last few exhibition performances have been lackluster to say the least.
And with Pacquiao’s focus being directed towards the Barrios fight, a rematch with Mayweather is merely a fleeting thought.
“I don’t have that in my mind right now. That’s not my focus for Saturday. I always say, ‘One at a time.’ Let’s talk about it after the fight,” he said. “Let me focus on this fight. It’s not an easy opponent. He’s a champion. I have to be 100% mentally and physically.”
Meanwhile, his opponent, Barrios, might just not let him have the glory of facing Mayweather again. In fact, by his own admission, he has enough “bad intentions” to punch Pacquiao back into retirement.
“It’s my time now, and I’m going to show that come Saturday,” he said during their presser. “I’m going in there with bad intentions and power in both hands. I won’t hesitate to pull the trigger.”
