Near the beginning of his career, Manny Pacquiao was shockingly knocked out in a monumental upset against a ‘journeyman’ boxer.

Throughout his incredible boxing career, Manny Pacquiao has always found himself in the ‘greatest of all time’ conversation because of his body of work.

‘PacMan’ is the only fighter in boxing history to have won a world title in eight separate weight classes, showcasing his dominance over his 30-year career.

Despite that, even the greats have suffered major setbacks, and Pacquiao was just 17 years old when he suffered his first.

Pacquiao missed weight before being knocked out by journeyman

Earlier this year, Pacquiao shockingly returned to the sport for the first time since 2021, but not just at any capacity.

The 47-year-old competed for the WBC welterweight title against Mario Barrios, taking the champion all the way to a decision, which finished as a draw.

Although the consensus is that Pacquiao has never officially missed weight, in just his 12th fight in the sport, a 17-year-old Pacquiao failed to make his required weight ahead of his fight against Rustico Torrecampo.

And because of his weight miss, ‘PacMan’ was made to wear heavier gloves than his opponent, who at the time of their fight was 11-4-5 and widely regarded as a ‘journeyman’.

Despite having missed weight, the fight was widely regarded as a stepping stone onto en route to bigger and better things for Pacquiao, who at the time had already been catching the eye of the boxing world.

Although he started the fight off the better of the two, Pacquiao quickly came to learn that ring experience was a huge thing in the sport, and he found himself against the ropes on several occasions.

And after two tough rounds of back-and-forth action, Torrecampo detonated a huge left hook on the chin of ‘PacMan’ who was caught dipping his head, sending him to sleep.

After several seconds, Pacquiao began to attempt to make it back to his feet, but his legs were simply not underneath him and the referee stepped in shortly after.

Pacquiao will return to the ring in 2026

Despite returning with a draw against Barrios, the Filipino fighter will return to the ring in 2026 where he will look to break his own record of becoming a world champion at 47 years old.

And although there are ongoing talks between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather for a potential title bout, rumors continue to surface that ‘PacMan’ could fight Rolly Romero for the WBA welterweight belt.
