The World Boxing Organization on Thursday ordered negotiations to begin for Sam Noakes and Abdullah Mason to meet for the lightweight title after it was stripped from Keyshawn Davis. Davis deliberately missed weight and tried to bait De Los Santos into fighting despite him weighing into another weight class but De Los Santos didn’t take the bait and declined to fight him.
Despite not fighting and risking insult and injury. De Los Santos made $165,000 for not fighting which isn’t that bad considering that he signed up to make Davis look good at home with the possibility of shocking the world and winning the WBO belt. De Los Santos being ranked in the top 15 will not get him another title shot unless he’s hand picked again.
Davis came in overweight Friday for his scheduled title defense against Edwin De Los Santos. Davis was stripped of the title, and the Saturday fight was canceled. Mason, 21, was elevated to the main event and stopped Jeremia Nakathila in the fifth round. Mason (19-0, 17 KOs) is ranked No. 2 by the WBO. Noakes (17-0, 15 KOs), 27, is the WBO’s No. 1-ranked lightweight. He last fought in May, when he scored a third-round knockout of Patrik Balaz.

Both fighters were on the cusp of fighting for the title. This fight will be very competitive, more so compared to the fight that was scheduled to happen last Saturday between Davis vs De Los Santos. That fight was a homecoming fight to make Davis look good. De Los Santos didn’t really have more than a puncher’s chance in that match up. Without a doubt Mason will be looking to become boxing’s youngest champion at 21 years old.
