Mikaela Mayer repeated the trick against Sandy Ryan, beating her to retain her WBO Welterweight Title.

Mayer came through with a unanimous decision victory, but she had to overcome some adversity as a big cut threatened to allow Ryan back into the fight. Sandy said she would be much better in this fight, having had to overcome a paint-throwing incident in the build-up to their first fight. Ryan did do that, as she imposed her game plan in the first few rounds. Ryan was using her jab to hit Mayer each time the latter tried to close the gap.

However, on the occasion that Mayer got through, her power showed she could hurt Ryan. A big right hand in the opener proved that. Ryan was still boxing in the second round, throwing Mayer off her rhythm. However, the champion finally worked out Ryan for the first time in the third. She was throwing four-five punch combinations, connecting with a big uppercut. The champion found more success in the fifth round. A left hook landed, after which she threw a right hand that also connected.

Ryan was being outworked, but she found a second wind in round eight. A clash of heads resulted in blood pouring from Mayer’s left eyelid. The challenger saw that, as she threw more combinations. Ryan also found success in the ninth round with a big right hand. Another right hand was followed up with an uppercut. While Ryan rallied late on, Mayer finished strong in the final round. She connected with a right hand and uppercut. Ryan needed a stoppage, which never looked like coming, as Mayer got the decision. Mayer’s focus is now on facing Lauren Price for the Undisputed Welterweight Title.

Post-Fight

“I think (the difference) was just me sitting on my shots and committing to my hooks more. Those hooks were coming over the top. Sandy tends to stand straight up — she comes forward, she’s strong, and she puts the pressure on, but she’s straight up and down so we worked on chopping her down with those hooks over the top. It was a great two fights.

“I think that the women are getting better and better, and I think me and Sandy just set the new bar for what competitive fights should look like. Going into this fight, the odds were even. Those are the type of fights the women are putting on — even fights, 50/50 matchups, and those give you these type of performances,” Mayer said
