Michael Conlan will be aiming to take another step back toward the top of the featherweight division when he faces Jack Bateson in a highly intriguing clash in Dublin, Ireland.
This is a chance for Conlan (19-3, 9 KO’s) to string together back-to-back wins in 2025, something he badly needs after a turbulent couple of years that saw him endure some damaging defeats. A victory here would not only solidify his comeback but also put him right back into the conversation at world level.
Bateson (20-1, 6 KO’s) enters this contest as a hungry challenger looking to make a name for himself. The Leeds fighter has built a reputation as a clever technician with sharp fundamentals, excellent footwork, and plenty of speed.

For all of Bateson’s ability, the key question here is whether he is ready for a fighter of Conlan’s caliber. The Belfast man is battle-tested, having shared the ring with some of the world’s best in recent years. He has fought in high-pressure environments and headlined major cards.
Conlan’s ring IQ is arguably his biggest asset. He knows how to control the pace, pick his moments, and exploit the weaknesses of less seasoned opponents. Against Bateson, expect him to lean heavily on that experience by using smart movement with a consistent jab, and sharp counterpunching.
If the Yorkshireman can establish his rhythm early and keep Conlan at range, he may well find success in the opening rounds. However, the question remains whether he can sustain that pace against a legitimate world class operator.
Bateson will need to take risks at some stage, and that’s when Conlan’s counterpunching comes into play. Conlan has historically not been the biggest puncher in the division, so a stoppage looks less likely. However, if Conlan senses Bateson wilting late on, he may well push for a statement finish in front of the Irish crowd.
I understand some people have doubts coming into this one for Conlan due to what’s occurred in recent years. But I don’t think that matters too much against Bateson. Then again, I may be slightly biased to Conlan having met him previously and had a good conversation with him where he came across as a really great and down to earth bloke.
Nevertheless, weighing all things up, I’m taking Michael Conlan to win in rounds 6-10 at odds of 8.50. I believe Conlan’s sharp counterpunching, especially his work to the body, will break Bateson down late on in front of a roaring crowd.
