Mike Tyson Gives Canelo The Edge Over Crawford

Mike Tyson has given his take on Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford, as he backed the Mexican to come out on top.

Alvarez defends his Undisputed Super Middleweight Title on September 13, having become undisputed at 168 for a second time after his William Scull win in his last bout. Meanwhile, Crawford jumps up two weight divisions having defeated Israil Madrimov last August in his last fight at 154 pounds.

The narrative heading into the fight is that the additional weight will heavily favor Canelo, as Crawford showed in the Madrimov fight that he struggled to deal with his opponent’s power even with the win. Similar straight right hands from Canelo would do extensive damage. Tyson hopes Crawford will come out victorious but he backed Canelo.

Tyson Reacts

“I want Crawford to win, but it doesn’t look like it’s gonna happen, I would like for that to happen but (Canelo) is a hard puncher, he’s a smart fighter, he can move. I’m just curious I just wanna see it, I want to be there and see it. Listen, there’s been upsets like that before, Henry Armstrong at 124lbs he beat the 146lb champion, so you know, you never know. Anything can happen when two men are in the ring or in a basketball court, anything can happen,” Tyson said

The Challenge

A key factor in Canelo’s favor is his body punching. The Mexican is known for his devastating hooks to the body, a weapon he uses to systematically break down his opponents. He demonstrated this in his bouts against fighters like Gennadiy Golovkin and Caleb Plant, where he relentlessly targeted the midsection to sap their energy and slow them down. For Crawford, a fighter who is not accustomed to carrying the extra weight, absorbing these punishing blows could be a huge factor.

Canelo is also an expert at cutting off the ring, forcing his opponents into corners and against the ropes. He uses subtle footwork and intelligent pressure to create traps. He executed this perfectly against a slick fighter like Caleb Plant, who was constantly forced to fight on Canelo’s terms. Against Crawford, who thrives on space and lateral movement, Canelo’s ability to shrink the ring and force toe-to-toe exchanges will be crucial. If Crawford is unable to use his speed to escape these tight spaces, he will be a stationary target for Canelo’s crushing power shots.
