Munguia Leaves De La Hoya; Was It Because Of Canelo?
Patrick Breen/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK

Oscar De La Hoya has suffered a major blow after Jaime Munguia signed a multi-fight deal with Top Rank.

Munguia left Golden Boy Promotions after his loss to Canelo Alvarez. It was the first defeat of his career as he missed out on the chance to become the Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion. Before the fight, De La Hoya talked up Munguia as someone who could dethrone Canelo. In the pre-fight presser, Canelo warned Munguia about De La Hoya. Alvarez accused De La Hoya of attempting to steal his money during his time with Golden Boy.

Canelo warned Munguia to be wary as Alvarez and De La Hoya nearly came to blows. Munguia has left for a fresh start, leaving De La Hoya without one of his best stars. It is claimed Munguia will box Erik Bazinyan on September 20. The news will come as a surprise as De La Hoya had big plans for Mexico despite his loss.

De La Hoya On Munguia

“I thought Jaime did excellent against the current face of boxing right now,” De La Hoya said. “I strongly feel that — I take nothing away from Canelo, I’ve always said he’s a good fighter in the ring. But, this experience for Jaime will just take him to another level.

“It’s just like Mayweather and Canelo. It’s the same thing. Canelo got schooled and then he became the face of boxing. Same thing with Munguia. He gained experience. He didn’t get schooled. [And] he gains experience and becomes a better fighter. This is just the beginning for Jaime,” De La Hoya said

Oscar oversaw Munguia’s first world title in 2018 when the Mexican stopped Sadam Ali to win the WBO Junior Middleweight Title. Munguia then worked his way up the ranks to become one of the best super middleweights. Top Rank has fellow super middleweight Christian Mbilli in their ranks. Mbilli takes on Sergiy Derevyanchenko. If Mbilli comes out on top, he could face Munguia sometime next year.

Munguia’s Set-Up

Munguia’s other change will be to reunite with his former trainer, Erik Morales. He teamed up with Freddie Roach for the Canelo fight to add more offense to his game. While he did land on Canelo, Munguia did not have the power to earn Canelo’s respect. Munguia will reunite with his ex-trainer Erik Morales. That trainer change has also come out of the blue, given Roach’s praise for the fighter.

“If he didn’t have a defense, he wouldn’t have an offense at all, either. He’s a good fighter, he listens very well. I train him in the gym and I train him hard, and it’s worked out well. Mostly his head movement [has improved]. He’s slipping punches, making guys miss. He counters on top of that – countering’s the important part, ‘cause that’s where the points can be scored. He’s gonna slip and make him miss and counter with the right hand over the top, or with the left jab. I’ve got him really prepared for this. We’ve done this over and over and over again,” Roach said

De La Hoya has also lost Ryan Garcia to a one-year ban. Ryan failed for Ostarine, meaning his win over Devin Haney became a no-contest. De La Hoya now has William Zepeda and Vergil Ortiz as other big names. Since neither of them has a world title, De La Hoya has a challenge building up those fighters while keeping them in his stable.

Craig Kimbrel lands with World Series contender after latest release

Craig Kimbrel is hoping to make an impact with an MLB team down the stretch, and a World Series contender is giving the former All-Star reliever a shot. Kimbrel agreed to a big-league contract with the Houston Astros on Thursday, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. Kimbrel began the 2025 season with the Atlanta Braves after signing a minor-league contract with them in March. The right-hander started out with the Double-A Columbus Clingstones and did not give up a hit in three appearances. Kimbrel was then promoted to the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers, where he went 1-1 with a 2.00 ERA and 23 strikeouts over 18 innings. The Braves added Kimbrel to their active roster on June 6. He pitched a scoreless seventh inning in Atlanta's 5-4 win over the San Francisco Giants that day. Kimbrel allowed a walk and a hit in the inning. The following day, Atlanta made the puzzling decision to designate Kimbrel for assignment. Kimbrel opted for free agency rather than accepting his minor league assignment. He then signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers but never made it to their MLB roster. Kimbrel was granted his release on Thursday and signed with Houston. Kimbrel, 37, is a nine-time All-Star who has pitched for eight different teams during his MLB career. He led the National League in saves four times and was one of the best relief pitchers in the league during his prime. Kimbrel also helped the Boston Red Sox win a World Series in 2018. The Astros were 69-58 entering Thursday and had a 1.5-game lead over the Seattle Mariners in the AL West. If Kimbrel is healthy, he could provide Houston with some valuable bullpen depth over the final stretch of the season.

Jameis Winston's Nickname For Giants Quarterbacks Appears to Exclude Russell Wilson

The New York Giants played their third preseason game of the year on Thursday night. They easily handled the New England Patriots, blowing them out 42-10. The Giants are now undefeated this preseason, holding a record of 3-0, following victories over the Buffalo Bills, the New York Jets, and now the Patriots. While everything has looked great on the field for the Giants this preseason, averaging just over 35 points per game in their three victories, there appears to be a handful of tough decisions the franchise will have to make before the regular season kicks off. One decision assuredly near the top of that list will be the handling of their currently crowded, quarterback depth chart. As of Thursday night, the Giants are carrying Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, Jaxson Dart, and Tommy DeVito on their roster. How Many Quarterbacks Will Make Giants Roster? While Wilson did not see the field during Thursday's game, he remains listed as the No. 1 QB on the Giants latest unofficial depth chart. Winston is listed as No. 2, Dart as the No. 3, and DeVito is listed as the No. 4. This has led many to ask if the Giants will carry four QBs as they near the final cutdown to their official 53-man roster in preparation for Week 1 of the regular season. The deadline for this cutdown is looming over every NFL team's head, as it will show itself on August 26. Winston, who was the first QB brought in during free agency this offseason by the Giants, appears as comfortable as ever, as he has been everywhere he's played during his 10-year career. Following the Giants victory on Thursday, Winston broke out a camera, filming himself alongside Dart and DeVito, revealing the nickname he's coined for the trio. While it's evident Winston is getting along swimmingly with his other QBs, the nickname "The Three Amigos" appears to exclude QB No. 1, Wilson. "They call us the three amigos," Winston said. Winston would go on to compliment DeVito, who threw for three touchdowns against the Patriots, while also pointing out the Giants continue winning with their young QBs. "Somebody had the hat trick today. We eat Ws with the young bucks. You know what time it is. Go big blue!" There have been no reported rifts or issues between Wilson and any of the other QBs on the Giants roster, solely speculation that Wilson won't be the long-term answer at QB for the Giants. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, is one of the NFL reporters who has suggested Wilson could be traded to make room for Dart as the No. 1 QB. Florio made the suggestion earlier this week that Wilson could be a trade target of the Cowboys. The QB situation for the Giants should become more clear following the final 53-man roster-cutdown. Until then, the world will continue to enjoy Winston's hilarious antics.

Browns 'trust' Dillon Gabriel more than Shedeur Sanders for a very good reason

The Cleveland Browns seemed to say plenty regarding their feelings about rookie quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders when they repeatedly listed Gabriel above Sanders on unofficial depth charts throughout August. Sanders played well in Cleveland's preseason opener at the Carolina Panthers on Aug. 8 when Gabriel was recovering from a hamstring injury. Gabriel then received his opportunity to shine in the Aug. 16 preseason matchup at the Philadelphia Eagles when Sanders was dealing with an oblique issue. For a piece published on Thursday, Jason Lloyd of The Athletic suggested that the stats from those contests show "the Browns trust Gabriel more than they do Sanders" heading into their Week 1 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7. "The Browns used pre-snap motion 45 percent of the time with Gabriel against the Philadelphia Eagles," Lloyd wrote. "They used it 31 percent of the time in Sanders’ game against the Carolina Panthers, according to TruMedia data. On third downs, that increased to 63 percent for Gabriel and plummeted to 18 percent for Sanders." The Browns selected Gabriel in the third round of this year's draft before they made a trade to take a flier on Sanders at overall pick No. 144. Against the Panthers, Sanders completed 14-of-23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns. To compare, Gabriel connected on 13-of-18 passes for 143 yards with a pick-six against the Eagles. He was also credited with a lost fumble. "Gabriel was three of four on [tight-window throws] against the Eagles, according to NextGen Stats, and two of those turned third downs into first downs," Lloyd added. "Sanders was zero for four on tight-window throws against the Panthers." It's worth noting that none of this matters as of publication. Veteran Joe Flacco will serve as Cleveland's Week 1 starter, and the Browns seem serious about having Flacco, Gabriel, Sanders and backup Kenny Pickett on the active roster through at least a portion of the upcoming season. The trade deadline will arrive on Nov. 4. Lloyd mentioned that "a fear that Sanders may develop elsewhere" is a reason the Browns are holding onto the former Colorado star when they prefer Gabriel. As of now, Sanders is on track to continue his development while working in the Browns film room as an unused quarterback throughout the fall.

Andrew Billings and Bears defense go from HBO stars to AFC champs

The Bears made it onto HBO's Hard Knocks this past week in episode 3, looking better than they looked all last season when they actually starred in it. It featured their hard-fought practice at Halas Hall and then Sunday night's 38-0 rout of the Bills, but most of all it was their defense getting the good film. Maybe edge rusher Austin Booker came out looking the best, or Joe Thuney. Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver was perplexed with trying to get past Thuney in practice and didn't mind expressing his admiration for the technique shown by the All-Pro guard who was shutting him down. Booker not only had some great footage of his violent sack in the game but was caught getting some friendly advice at practice from Bills tackle Dion Dawkins. Then it was Dawkins from the sidelines who saw a charging Andrew Billings and remarked "That boy’s big as hell, the D-tackle, look at 97.” It seemed funny for 6-5, 320-pound Dawkins to call Billings big but he is at 340 now after adding some weight this year. Don’t call it weight, though. "I put on a lot of muscle actually," Billings said Wednesday after practice to reporters’ laughter. "Twenty pounds of muscle.” It helps to be stronger if you're coming back from a torn pectoral muscle, the injury that ended Billings' year and for all intents and purposes the defense's run-stopping ability last year. They already were struggling more than the previous year against the run before Billings' injury, but then his loss eventually led them to finish 28th against the run. "Especially, the run game's always my job first and foremost, but also in the past, I think I've been able to complement the defense,” Billings said. Billings believes he can rush the passer even at his weight, if necessary. Even as a nose tackle, last year suggested he's right. He had only one sack in his eight games before the injury against Arizona but managed seven pressures. The total was more than in any season since his rookie year of 2018 with the Bengals, and four more than he had for a full season in 2024 with the Bears as well as for 14 games in 2023 with the Raiders. He proved it again in last weeks preseason win with a sack against the Bills that triggered a big celebration on the field. “They’re always happy when I get a sack, so it's always good when the big boy gets a sack,” Billings said. While stopping the run remains the "big boy's" focus and essentially the first goal for the whole defense, Billings said the pass rush is starting to excite everyone. “Specifically, lately, our rush, rushing together as a unit has really come together really well,” he said. Part of the excitement is from coordinator Dennis Allen's approach. They'll force the issue with blitzes to complement the linemen. “We're going to bring pressure," Billings said. "It doesn't matter where we are in the game situationally, the pressure makes sense. We're going to bring it.” The approach has Billings talking lofty team defensive goals. Last year the secondary spoke like this, but when the big nose tackle is saying it then it gets everyone to take notice. “Our goal, first of all, is to be top five in everything," Billings said. "If we are top five in everything, we're going to win a lot of games. "Ultimately, we want to be No. 1, but our goal is to be top five in everything.” As a result, they're enjoying the idea of matching up against the first team from Kansas City. It gives them a chance to show everyone what Billings says he's seeing in practice. “First, the speed in which you're moving," Billings said. "After the ball's thrown, after the running back, if he breaks the line of scrimmage, we're all hustling there. "I think that's a huge part of being top five. We see the takeaways that we produced, that's a part of it. Third down defense. First, second down defense is just coming together.” Last week was a test but they played only one series and against Buffalo's backups. “Yes, the first team, they went out there, got their three-and-out," Billings said. "It still was a test, too, going out there and playing against no matter who, no matter who you're going against out there on that field game day, it is time to go. "But definitely a lot more snaps this K.C. game."
