Undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has requested an extension from the WBO. As negotiations continue for a potential clash with interim champion Joseph Parker. Usyk’s camp, led by director Serhii Lapin, insists that the Ukrainian superstar has more than earned the right to dictate his next steps after a grueling stretch of historic accomplishments.

WBO Mandate After Dubois Win

Following Usyk’s emphatic five-round knockout victory over Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium. Which secured his second reign as undisputed champion, the WBO ordered him to face its interim titleholder Parker. As per sanctioning body rules, a 30-day negotiation period was triggered before purse bids would be required to decide the host and promotional rights.

With that deadline approaching, Team Usyk formally requested an extension, citing injuries and the need for recovery. While they originally sought 90 extra days, the WBO granted a 30-day extension instead.

Why Usyk Needs More Time

In a statement released through the Ready To Fight platform, Lapin explained that Usyk has endured an extraordinarily demanding 18 months in which he cemented his place as one of boxing’s all-time greats.

“Throughout his entire professional career, both Oleksandr Usyk and our whole team have proven that we respect all potential opponents as well as the rules that govern professional boxing,” Lapin said.

“Over the past year and a half, Usyk has accomplished a historic achievement by becoming the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion twice. That demanded tremendous physical and mental effort, and great sacrifice. The champion has earned the chance to let his body recover from the effects of a punishing training regime and from injuries that are often invisible to the outside world. And, ultimately, simply to rest and spend time with his family.”

“Don’t Push the Horses”

Lapin closed by reiterating Usyk’s message from fight week before hi s bout with Dubois. Urging patience from fans and officials alike.

“Most importantly he has earned the right to choose his own future  and to take the time he needs to make that decision. So guys, don’t push the horses.”

For now, Parker remains the WBO’s designated challenger. But Team Usyk has made it clear that any decision on what comes next will be made on their own terms.
