Talks over Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs. Jaron Ennis fight have stalled due to disagreements over money.

The primary hurdle lies in a disconnect between Ortiz’s manager, Rick Mirigian, and his promoters at Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya and Eric Gomez. Mirigian is reportedly fighting for a career-high payday, which may be unrealistic given the projected revenue. Meanwhile, is Golden Boy reportedly wary of over-promising a guarantee that the PPV may not cover.

In addition, De La Hoya has insisted that Ortiz is the “A-side” following his knockout of Erickson Lubin, a claim Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn (Ennis’s promoter) has dismissed. If there is no agreement, both fighters are already looking at alternative paths. Ortiz Jr. has expressed a desire to face Errol Spence Jr. at AT&T Stadium in an all-Texas mega-event, or challenge WBC champion Sebastian Fundora. Meanwhile, Ennis is also being linked to a possible move up to 160 lbs or a title fight at 154.

“The issue in making the match is down between Eric Gomez and Oscar De La Hoya from Golden Boy and Rick Mirigian, who is the manager for Vergil Ortiz. They’re fighting a war in the boardroom over the money for that fight. If they can’t get it worked out, the fight is not going to happen. Rick has taken a scorched-earth attitude about it,” Dan Rafael said

Will It Happen?

A smaller portion of the blame has to be directed at the fighters themselves for not demanding the fight at all costs. While they shared an intense face-off in the ring after Ortiz beat Lubin, both have been quick to pivot to other names. Ortiz’s vocal interest in Errol Spence Jr. and Sebastian Fundora, coupled with Ennis potentially moving up, suggests that neither man sees this specific fight as their only path to a massive payday.

In an era where the best are expected to fight the best, their willingness to entertain “Plan B” options does not help.
