This Saturday Puerto Rican star Oscar Collazo defends his WBA, WBO, and Ring Magazine titles against Filipino challenger Jayson Vayson.
Oscar Collazo (12-0, 9 KO’s) is one of the fastest-rising names in the lower weight classes. The 28-year-old southpaw has already unified titles in just 12 professional outings and has developed a reputation as both a disciplined technician and a genuine finisher.
Jayson Vayson (14-1-1, 8 KOs) represents a stern test. The 26-year-old Filipino enters on a four-fight win streak. Vayson has campaigned at both 105 and 108-pounds, giving him a touch of size and experience that could come into play in this one on Saturday night.
Oscar Collazo – Odds 1.09 (Bet 365)
Record: 12-0, 9 KO’s
Age: 28
Height: 5ft2
Reach: 61”

Stance: Southpaw
Jayson Vayson – Odds 7.00 (Bet 365)
Record: 14-1-1, 8 KO’s
Age: 27
Height: 5ft4
Reach: 66”
Weight: Minimumweight
Stance: Orthodox
Collazo is a fighter that thrives on applying heavy pressure, where his timing and southpaw angles can prove vital. He likes to gradually increase the heat as the rounds wear on, forcing mistakes and breaking opponents down.
Vayson is the taller man with a slight reach edge, and he would prefer to keep the fight long, picking spots and slowing the tempo. The key question is whether he can maintain distance long enough to blunt Collazo’s rhythm.
Tactically, Vayson’s best chance is to frustrate Collazo with lateral movement and a stiff jab, pushing the fight into the later rounds. The defending champ, Collazo, will need to be patient with his pressure approach, but once he closes the gap, his body work and combinations could take over the fight.
The minimumweight division rarely gets mainstream recognition, but there should be plenty of coverage ahead of this fight on Saturday night. This one could really come down to which fighter has the better cardio and durability, as both men are truly elite at what they do.
Vayson is a really good fighter but Collazo has shown too much class, too much composure, and too much power to fade here. Vayson is a real credible challenger, but the champion’s mix of skill and finishing ability looks decisive.
I expect a competitive start where both guys win early rounds in different fashion. Many will be predicting a Collazo stoppage, though I’m not sure whether he has enough power to finish a fighter that has previously fought in higher weight divisions and been involved in gruelling fights.
I’m leaning towards Oscar Collazo to win by decision or technical decision at odds of 3.75 (Bet 365), but I am not fully discounting a late knockdown from Collazo considering his style.
