Canelo Alvarez may still be boxing’s biggest star, but his recent performances have raised fresh questions about his future at the elite level. The four-division world champion looked shaky in May when he scraped past William Scull by decision. Then in September, his long reign at the top came to a halt. At Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Terence Crawford moving up two weight classes outboxed him across 12 rounds to hand Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) a decisive defeat and strip him of his undisputed super middleweight crown. Despite the setback, Alvarez insisted afterward that he has no plans to retire.
Former promoter Oscar De La Hoya has an idea for how Canelo can extend his career at the top: part ways with longtime trainer Eddy Reynoso.
“Get a new trainer,” De La Hoya told Fight Hub TV. “You’ll do better. A new trainer will teach you different tricks.”
Alvarez and Reynoso have been together since the beginning, weathering defeats to Floyd Mayweather (2013) and Dmitry Bivol (2021). Reynoso was named Trainer of the Year for guiding Alvarez through his peak, but De La Hoya believes that loyalty is now holding him back.
“I can’t advise him on retiring or staying in boxing—that’s a very personal decision,” De La Hoya said. “But I can say hey, get a new trainer.”

Oscar De La Hoya isn’t writing Alvarez off. At 35, the Guadalajara native still commands global drawing power and has plenty of lucrative options if he chooses to fight on.
“He still has a chance to fight several more fights with the elites,” De La Hoya said. “But he needs a new trainer.”
For now, Alvarez plans to take time off before announcing his next move. Whether that involves staying with Reynoso or making a bold corner change could define the final chapter of his storied career.
