Tim Bradley believes Manny Pacquiao should step away from fighting younger opponents after his recent majority draw to WBC Welterweight Champion Mario Barrios.
The 46-year-old Pacquiao looked a step behind in his first professional fight since 2021, showing signs of age with slower footwork and reduced defensive sharpness. Despite a valiant effort, he failed to claim the WBC title. According to Compubox, Barrios out-landed Pacquiao 120 to 101 in total punches and dominated with the jab, connecting on 45 compared to Pacquiao’s 20. While Pacquiao landed more power shots (81 to Barrios’ 75), it wasn’t enough to win. Pacquiao has been linked to a potential bout with Rolando Romero, but Bradley says there’s no point.
“An exhibition is one thing, but fighting these young guns, that’s another thing. Is Pacquiao capable? Yeah, it’s Pacquiao. He’s the best athlete I’ve been in the ring with. Fighting these young guns that are 16 years younger than you, it is dangerous. All it takes is one punch. He got through with it against Barrios. Moving forward, we’ll see what he does next,” Bradley said
This naturally raises questions over who Manny should face if he continues. He has consistently called out Floyd Mayweather for a rematch. Pacman suffered a one-sided unanimous decision loss to Floyd in 2015, as he later underwent rotator cuff surgery. Pacquiao felt that was the reason he did not perform, while also claiming he felt he won the fight. Reports had indicated that Mayweather may have been present at the Pacquiao-Barrios fight amid speculation that a rematch could happen. While Mayweather did not turn up, the Filipino has continued to call for that fight.
“Let’s fight again if he wants. I have no problem with that. I’m active now. I don’t pick my opponent and I fight them all in my division,” Pacquiao said
Equally, Manny could target a crossover fight or a bout with Jake Paul. The latter has a tendency to put on the biggest events. Paul has faced the likes of Mike Tyson, which reportedly earned him $40 million. While the weight difference is big, with Paul fighting at cruiserweight, The Problem Child has called out Gervonta Davis. Tank fights at a lighter weight than Manny. A Paul fight earns Manny a big payday while being less of a risk. Either way, Pacquiao has some thinking to do.
