Manny Pacquiao’s trainer, Jonathan Penalosa, has passed away at the age of 57 following his battle with colon cancer.
The news may set back Pacquiao’s plans to come out of retirement following reports that he is in talks to face Mario Barrios. Barrios is the WBC Welterweight Champion, and if Pacquiao were to get a win, he would become the oldest champion at 147. He already holds that record when he defeated Keith Thurman in 2019 to become the WBA Welterweight Champion.
Pacquiao walked away from the sport in 2021 when he lost a unanimous decision to Yordenis Ugas. Since then, he has been dabbling in exhibitions, the latest of which was against a Japanese kickboxer: Rukiya Anpo. Pacquiao was outboxed over the three rounds as he no longer looked like the same fighter. He has since then been campaigning in the Philippines as he continues his journey into politics.
However, reports stress that he could make a comeback to secure a fight this year. But the latest news is a setback. The news of his trainer’s passing comes after Pacquiao had visited him in hospital. The Filipino has now come out to pay his respects to a trainer who contributed so much towards his success in becoming an eight-weight world champion.
“Please join me in praying for Jonathan Penalosa Sr, one of my long-time trainers and friends. “He’s currently battling stage 4 colon cancer. Let’s also pray for his entire family during this time. We continue to believe in the healing and strength that comes from God.
“Rest in peace, Coach Jonathan Penalosa. You were not just my coach, you became my brother in the fight and in life. Thank you so much for all your sacrifices and love for me and my family. We will never forget you. Our prayers are with the Penalosa family. We will forever miss you, Coach,” Pacquiao said
