Ricky Hatton found dead at home aged 46

According to Manchester Evening News, legendary British fighter Ricky Hatton has been found dead at his home in Greater Manchester.

The former two-weight world champion’s body was found, with his death not being treated as suspicious, according to Greater Manchester Police.

A police cordon is in place at Hatton’s home in Hyde. A spokesperson for the police has confirmed the death is not being treated as suspicious.

This devastating turn of events comes as Hatton was due to return to boxing and face Eisa Al Dah in December.

Hatton has had his public struggles with mental health and drug addiction, speaking openly about suicidal thoughts and the importance of speaking out about his troubles.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson confirmed the finding of a body: “We can confirm that we have found a body at an address on Bowlacre Road in Gee Cross at 6.45am today, Sunday, September 14. The death is not being treated as suspicious.”

There’s only one Ricky Hatton

Hatton was adored by boxing fans throughout his career and in retirement. When fighting abroad, his fans travelled in numbers that had never been seen before and since. 

When the Stockport-born fighter travelled to Las Vegas to face Floyd Mayweather, he travelled in numbers that shocked the boxing world, with thousands of Brits taking over Vegas.

Hatton previously spoke to Sky Sports HQ about that 2007 fight and his feelings about the amount of supporters he had: 

“I always said my greatest achievement was the fan-base and the following I had and I think that was none more apparent than when I went to Las Vegas,” he told Sky Sports News HQ.

“Something like 30-35,000 fans travelled over to watch my fight Floyd Mayweather. And we absolutely took over Floyd Mayweather’s home town. It was unbelievable.”

Ricky Hatton was a fighter I watched growing up with my late Dad. He always gave everything and embodied everything a fighter should be. He won many battles in the ring, and he also battled outside it. His legacy will live on, and there will only ever be one Ricky Hatton.
