WBA Welterweight Champ Rolando Romero says he will never box WBO Welterweight Champion Devin Haney, despite a unification on offer, as he cited Haney’s lawsuit against Ryan Garcia as the reason.
Romero’s reasoning was based on Haney’s prior behavior, namely his reaction to the Ryan Garcia fight. Haney suffered a majority decision defeat, which resulted in him hitting the canvas three times. However, the result was changed to a no-contest once Ryan failed VADA tests for Ostarine. Haney responded by suing Garcia for battery, a decision that earned him massive backlash.
Tim Bradley labelled the move as soft, while Haney later stated the decision to sue was not his idea, but his team’s idea. Romero has also been linked with a Manny Pacquiao fight, but that has been thrown into doubt after the WBA ordered him to face his mandatory Shakhram Giyasov. Romero also questioned why Haney did not call him out much earlier.
“Why didn’t they call me out after I beat Ryan? Why didn’t they call me out directly after they beat Norman? Why did they sit down and play all that humble stuff? Me and Devin are never going to fight. I want nothing to do with that fight. Like I said way back when. I believe he should go do his rematch with Ryan,” Romero said
One person who is not a fan of Romero is Claressa Shields. The Undisputed Heavyweight Champion backed herself to beat Romero. This is not the first time that Shields has entertained a crossover fight with a male boxer. She previously claimed she could beat former unified welterweight champion Keith Thurman after the latter stated that he could beat her with one hand. Shields is scheduled to rematch Franchon Crews Dezurn on February in a defense of her Undisputed Heavyweight Title. However, if the Rolly fight ever happened, Shields backed herself.
