A new name has joined the mix to be Anthony Joshua’s opponent when he returns to boxing.

Joshua, a former two-time heavyweight champion, is reportedly looking at a bout in Africa as part of his comeback plans, and there are plenty of names being linked with that fight.

There are reports calling for him to take on Oleksandr Usyk first. The Briton and Usyk fought twice already, with the Ukrainian winning both times.

But while a third fight between those two would draw plenty of attention, Joshua has another option on the table: a Russian star who claims there is already an agreement in place for them to meet next year.

Arslanbek Makhmudov, who faces Dave Allen in Sheffield this weekend, is being linked to a future bout with Joshua. The 6ft 5in heavyweight sees the Allen fight as a crucial step towards that opportunity.

The winner of Makhmudov vs Allen is expected to land a blockbuster fight against another former world champion, adding extra weight to an already important match-up.

And speaking to Boxing News, Makhmudov said he has already agreed to face Joshua next year, provided he gets past Allen.

“Yeah, we just spoke a little bit on Instagram. Just friendly, you know. And I offered him as a next fight, he said, ‘Okay, next year then. Next year we can do it.’”

He added: “For me, the fight is interesting because it’s a good opportunity. And in sport, because we had a bit of a story in the amateurs. He lost to guys in the European championship and the world championship – I beat these two guys. For me, it’s interesting.”

Anthony Joshua linked to potential fight with former sparring partner in Nigeria

Joshua has also been linked to another familiar face from his past.

The former world champion is expected to make his return to the ring in early 2026, with plans taking shape for a historic trip to Africa. Initially, there were rumours of a fight in Ghana, but talk has recently shifted towards a potential event in Nigeria.

Martin Bakole, the Congolese heavyweight who once served as a training partner for Joshua, has thrown his name into the mix as well. Bakole’s interest comes on the back of him rebounding from a tough loss to Joseph Parker.
