The circus came and went. I slept on it, hitting the pillow late Friday/early Saturday morning sober, but actually still under the influence after spending three hours watching overall sub pedestrian action, in a setup which came off as less majestic than promised or imagined. Boxing’s top show runner Turki Alashikh got whacked around pretty good on social media channels as folks saw Teofimo Lopez get a decent “W”, Devin Haney come off as too risk averse to be watchable to all but the YDKSAB d-riders, and Rolando Romero save the night a bit by out-boxing Ryan Garcia, superstar at crossroads.
See, when I sum it up that way, it sounds a bit compelling…but “a bit compelling” is not what the program director was aiming for.
I am glad I slept on it before giving “Fatal Fury” a summation and grade. Because I was in the mood to drop a “D” Friday night, even though I found pockets to appreciate. Like having Jim Lampley doing blow by blow, along with ex-Showtime Antonio Tarver , and Mike Coppinger of Ring. I posted to X props; they sounded pretty decent considering that was their first run together.
The show gets a C, from me, and that is because I am experienced.
The impatience in me as I saw Haney barely throw and like he’s gunning for a bicycle endorsement, and his foe Jose Ramirez follow the Californian ponderously….
The puzzlement I felt while asking myself why in God’s name go through the hassle of setting up in Times Square, one of the five most alive public spaces in the world, only to put walls up, making it a VIP exclusionary deal which pissed off plenty of folks….
Hearing Dan Rafael say he didn’t come to NYC to cover because press was not in the micro mini arena. They were put in a hotel with iffy Wi-Fi. Yeah, me too. I don’t crash parties I’m not invited too. I remember when PBC had Rafael on the outside, for being critical, ten years ago. That was not the wise long term play then, or now?
Curious choices from Turki, which I focused on more than would be typical if the Haney fight and the event-saving Romero upset over back to drawing board Garcia. His actions get more scrutiny when the fights he pays very handsomely under perform. So, that’s on the athletes.
The number of “A-sides” willing to throw 20 punches a round is pathetic. And guess what? He can’t fight for them. Turki has the power to effect change, not for the sake of being able to brag about it on a sizzle reel. Will he use it? He needs to be more Steinbrenner, bro.
Romero’s solid work versus Garcia, who is now at a true crossroads, being that his snap, his speed, was not at all there in NY, semi saved the night. King in recess Ryan maybe is happy the masses weren’t there to see him get dropped and his foe have his hand raised. On social, Garcia was slammed for being a weak off-PEDs fighter, and only he can shut that down.

My grade would have been worse if I filed Friday late late. Seeing Pat McAfee do a shill like it’s WWE irked me. And Ariel Helwani declaring the whole promotions as wondrous. Stop it. Gets me salty, and cranky. I don’t want to be that.
Best way to keep that at bay is for the damn fights to be good. Turki has another shot with the Canelo card. Hoping it comes together better than it did in NYC.
