Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs William Scull Fight Results: Canelo Earns UD-Secures Crawford Fight
EFE

For the second night in a row, the main event failed to produce fireworks as Saul ‘Canelo’ Álvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) vs. William Scull (23-0, 9 KOs) delivered a 12-round glorified sparring session.

Canelo scored a unanimous decision over Scull, with all three judges scoring it for Canelo (115-113, 116-112 & 119-109). After the scorecards were read, Canelo was presented with a gold RING Magazine title and faced off with Terence Crawford in the middle of the ring. Turki Alalshikh announced that Canelo-Crawford will take place on September 12 inside Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, NV.

According to CompuBox, “By throwing a combined 445 punches over 12 rounds, Canelo (152 punches) and Scull (293 punches) set a new record for fewest punches thrown in a 12 round fight tracked by CompuBox’s 40-year history. The previous record was 459 (Parker vs. Wilder). Canelo landed a fight-high 10 punches in the twelfth round. Otherwise, neither fighter landed more than 7 punches in any other round. They both averaged 5 punches landed per round. 40 of Canelo’s 48 power punch connects (83%) were body shots.”

It was a slow opening round as Canelo was gauging distance and feinting to see what could work later on in the fight. Scull used his left jab a few times but was more concerned with giving Canelo different looks than landing anything significant.

In the second round, Canelo aggressively stalked Scull, who didn’t do much to keep him off. Canelo landed a big right hook on Scull’s rib cage, which made him stagger, but other than that punch, there weren’t many highlights.

Canelo began to increase his punch output in the third round as Scull did a lot of moving but with limited offense. Canelo appeared to have figured out Scull’s rhythm at this point of the fight. Throughout the remainder of the fight, Scull caught Canelo coming in with a quick, check right hook and using his legs to avoid anything Canelo had coming to him. Canelo wasn’t landing clean shots but touching Scull on the arms and body to try to slow him down. Canelo did enough to earn the decision, with Scull appearing to be there only to survive.

Undercard Results

Cruiserweight Badou Jack (29-3-3, 17 KOs) is now the sole WBC champion as he defeated Noel Mikaelian (27-3, 12 KOs) via majority decision. The judges scored this one 114-114, 115-113, and 115-113 for Jack, who can now head towards a unification bout with one of the other champions.

Efe Ajagba (20-1-1, 14 KOs) and Martin Bakole (21-2-1, 16 KOs) fought to a majority draw as they kicked off the main telecast portion of the Canelo-Scull PPV. The three judges saw this one 96-94 Ajagba and 95-95 twice, as the fight’s result directly reflected what occurred throughout the fight.
