Shakur Stevenson says he is disappointed at Vasiliy Lomachenko for not fighting him, saying the Ukrainian ducked him.
Shakur has been linked with the Lomachenko fight for some time, especially when they were both with Top Rank. Loma is a three-weight world champion, making him one of the sport’s biggest stars as he enters the tail-end of his career. Shakur is also a three-weight world weight champion, and he is at the peak of his career. However, during their time at Top Rank, the fight never got made as Shakur later left Bob Arum. Loma is the current IBF Lightweight Champion after having stopped George Kambosos Jr. in his last fight.
That increased the narrative for Lomachenko to unify against Gervonta Davis or Shakur. Neither of those fights have been made so far. Meanwhile, Shakur has also failed in his attempt to fight Tank Davis. Tank has repeatedly stated that Shakur is a boring fighter while also downplaying his skills. But Shakur feels the fight is realistic, as he hit out at Lomachenko for not facing him.
He accused the Ukrainian of ducking him, as there is a suggestion that he may retire from the sport. His manager, Egis Klimas, also recently stated that a fight with Tank Davis made more sense than Shakur. This was on the grounds that Tank’s fighting style made him more appealing to the fanbase while also downplaying Shakur for being a defensive fighter.
“He’s [Tank] a much better fighter in my way and an upcoming fighter. I’m not going to take anything away from Shakur. He’s a good fighter, but he’s a bumper. He goes into a shell and runs away. Tank comes to fight. It’s a more interesting fight. It’s a more intriguing fight. That’s what makes it more interesting. That’s what makes it more interesting to fans. Right now, Lomachenko is the best opponent to fight Tank,” Klimas said
Shakur did not hold back on his views, saying he looked at Lomachenko in a different way. The following comments will hamper his chances of getting a fight with Loma, leaving Shakur to explore other avenues in boxing.
“With Tank, I always knew that with him being a big superstar, it’s going to happen on his time. It’s not going to be on my time. I’m going to call for it. I’m going to say his name, however, he gets mad, but truthfully. it’s on his time. It’s when he says, ‘Let’s fight.’ With the Loma fight, I kind of looked up to Lomachenko.
“I had a certain look up to Lomachenko. He was that guy for me. For him to be something like duck, like he don’t really want to fight me, it kind of made me look at him a little bit different. Truthfully, he had a hell of a career. He was a legend, but I still think he ducked me,” Shakur said
