Shakur Stevenson is putting his support behind Errol Spence Jr. as the former unified welterweight champion prepares to end a lengthy absence from the ring. Spence is scheduled to return on July 26 when he faces former WBO junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu in Australia at a 158-pound catchweight.

The bout will mark Spence’s first appearance since his blockbuster showdown with Terence Crawford nearly three years ago. Despite the extended layoff, Stevenson believes Spence has what it takes to return successfully and defeat Tszyu.

The upcoming fight represents a major moment for Spence’s career. The former IBF, WBA, and WBC welterweight champion has not competed since suffering the first loss of his professional career against Terence Crawford in July 2023.

That defeat cost Spence his unified welterweight titles and left questions about whether he would eventually return to the sport. Now, after nearly three years away from competition, Spence is set to make his comeback against one of the most recognizable names in the junior middleweight division.

Stevenson Confident in Spence

While many observers have expressed concerns about ring rust and inactivity, Stevenson believes Spence’s mentality will help him overcome any challenges associated with the layoff.

“I think he’s gonna do good,” Stevenson told Andre Ward on All The Smoke Fight. “I wish Errol the best, I hope Errol goes in there and beats Tim Tszyu up. I’m an Errol Spence fan. I was cool with Errol Spence before that Crawford fight a long time ago. I want Errol Spence to prosper.”

Stevenson has long admired Spence’s toughness and competitive mindset, qualities he believes will be critical when the fight begins.

Stevenson didn’t stop at simply wishing Spence well. The undefeated star made it clear he favors Spence to win the fight. “I don’t think Tim Tszyu can beat Errol,” Stevenson said.

“I know Errol, he’s mentally tough, he’s a dog when it comes to fighting, I don’t think Tim Tszyu can beat him.” The comments reflect the respect many fighters still have for Spence despite his long absence from the ring.

At his peak, Spence was widely regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in boxing and one of the sport’s most complete welterweights.
