Shakur Stevenson breaks down potential Subriel Matias showdown

On January 31 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Teofimo Lopez vs Shakur Stevenson will headline the “The Ring 6” fight card, with Lopez’s WBO super lightweight title on the line.

This bout will see Stevenson, the  reigning WBC lightweight champion, moving up in weight to take on his fellow American. Ahead of this showdown, an old video of Stevenson on The Porter Way Podcast has resurfaced, about a potential fight with the current WBC super lightweight champion, Subriel Matias.

Talking about Matias (23-2, 22 KOs) on The Porter Way Podcast, Stevenson (24-0, 11 KOs) said: “That’s a tough fight. That dude is relentless, and I think he’s gonna bring out a different version of me.”

“He’s gonna make me put something out there that y’all haven’t seen before. With his pressure, with his relentlessness, there’s no way you can just box and move. You gotta fight. You gotta fight at the times, and spurts, and pick the right punches and beat him at his game.”

Should Stevenson defeat Lopez and become the WBO super lightweight champion, a possible unification fight against Matias at 140 could be possible, if the heavy-handed Puerto Rican fighter can successfully defend his WBC crown against the unbeaten Brit Dalton Smith, on January 10.
