Shakur Stevenson has strong words for William Zepeda

Yes, you read that right, Shakur Stevenson (23-0, 11 KOs) is in no mood to keep things mellow as fight night approaches.

Saturday night will see the three-division world champion don his boxing gloves once again for an explosive WBC lightweight showdown against William Zepeda (33-0, 27 KOs) at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens. Their recent press conference was a spectacle in itself, tempers flared, and Stevenson was at his offensive best.

“I’m here. I’ve been calling this dude out for three years. I hear Oscar (De La Hoya) say that they have been trying to get this fight for three years. But they’re lying. They had the opportunity to fight me before. They turned it down. It was on Oscar,” he said, brushing off the Golden Boy Promotions head honcho’s claims. He then proceeded to issue a warning to Zepeda by potentially revealing his plans for fight night. “Come Saturday night, I’m coming in to beat his a--. He’s gonna come, be tough and strong. But I’m coming to whoop his a--; I stand by that. I’m f------ him up.”

Stevenson is coming to the fight after defending his WBC lightweight title against Josh Padley in February. Meanwhile, Zepeda, who is the interim champion, is fresh off two consecutive victories against Tevin Farmer.

Zepeda is undoubtedly a skilled boxer. However, he is not someone that Stevenson considers a challenge (in his own words). In fact, he actually wants to see if there is any material to the loud advertisements.

“These guys are acting like he’s a threat. This big monster. He’s ranked number one by these sanctioning bodies. If he’s skilled, I want to see it come Saturday. That’s what I want to see,” he said.

“I’m Whuppin’ Tom’s A*s”

The fight certainly has its host of doubters, who find it hard to place Stevenson as a serious boxer. And Turki Alalshikh’s statement about not wanting to see “any more Tom and Jerry-type boxing matches” has also fueled the doubters’ speculations about the same conspiring on fight night. But Stevenson has a message that is loud and clear.

“It’s a lotta doubters, a lotta haters and people that think that I’m not who I say I am,” he said while talking to the Ring Magazine. “If you call me Jerry, then I’m whuppin’ Tom a--. So, that’s what I’m coming here for.”
