It’s never easy following into your father’s footsteps when your father is a legend in the sport. It’s almost to the point where you should try another profession because it’s almost impossible to live up to his shoes.

Campbell Hatton’s decision to retire from boxing following another tough loss. Marks the end of a chapter that was as emotionally charged as it was challenging. As the son of British boxing icon Ricky Hatton, Campbell entered the sport with high expectations and immense pressure to live up to a legendary legacy. Despite his dedication, the results didn’t match the ambitions.

A fathers support

With Ricky Hatton’s support, Campbell’s choice to step away shows maturity and self awareness a reminder that boxing, while thrilling, can be unforgiving. It’s a brave move to walk away on your own terms rather than being forced out by the sport. Sometimes the greatest strength in boxing isn’t in the punches thrown, but in knowing when to stop.

“Campbell won’t be fighting again. He didn’t have a lot of amateur experience, gave it a go in the amateurs and then went pro, fought for the Area title and got beat, I thought he lost to be fair, then he fought the same lad straight away after, thought he won the second one but didn’t get the decision.

It’s a brutally honest assessment from a father who’s seen both the glory and the grind of boxing. Ricky’s transparency reflects not only his experience in the sport, but also the emotional weight of watching his son navigate a career filled with tough lessons. Despite the outcome, Campbell’s willingness to step into the ring and compete at a respectable level speaks to his courage.

“I told him listen son, you should be very proud of yourself. You’ve given it a go but if you’ve lost your mojo, you need to get out of this game. You can play any other sport but you can’t play boxing. I advised him and now he’s doing solar panels. Gone into another job, he’s a grafter and worked hard but it just wasn’t for Campbell.”
