Subriel Matias is set to defend his WBC junior welterweight title against Dalton Smith on January 10, 2026, as we preview this fight.
The matchup serves as the first title defense for Matias since he captured the belt from Alberto Puello via a majority decision in July 2025. Smith, the former British and European champion, enters his first world title opportunity with a perfect 18-0 (13 KOs) record. Smith secured his position as the mandatory challenger after a first-round TKO of Walid Ouizza and a unanimous decision win over Mathieu Germain. The Matias-Smith fight was briefly in jeopardy following an adverse VADA finding in Matias’ drug tests. However, the champion was cleared to proceed after proving the result was due to supplement contamination.
“The New York State Athletic Commission is aware that Mr Matias, who is currently licensed, has received an adverse analytic finding from VADA concerning an out of competition test. The reported concentration was below the applicable threshold used by multiple jurisdictions, including Nevada, California, and New York.” The commission added that Matias has been cooperative but that the situation remains under review and he will be subject to additional testing. At this time the fight is scheduled to proceed on 10 January 2026,” NYSAC said
