WBO & Ring Magazine junior welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez (22-1, 13 KOs) once again showed why he is one of boxing’s best when motivated.

Lopez kicked off the main card portion of the DAZN PPV by scoring a unanimous decision over Arnold Barboza Jr. (32-1, 11 KOs). All three judges saw this one for Lopez (116-112, 116-12, 118-110), who retained his junior welterweight title. During the post-fight interview, Lopez expressed his desire to face Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis next.

The fight began with both fighters trading jabs. They exchanged in the middle of the ring throughout the round as Barboza’s right hand landed, and Lopez’s straight right to the body was effective. It was a round filled with foot feints and determining space.

In the second round, Lopez began to warm up and flash that elite speed and accuracy, which forced Barboza to think more than throw his punches. Barboza would quickly adjust and rely on his counter-punching abilities to land some clean, straight right hands. Lopez continued to land a stiff left jab on Barboza’s body.

Lopez’s speed began to give Barboza issues throughout the third round. It was led by Lopez’s foot feints, which opened up his left hook and right uppercut to Barboza’s head. You can see that Barboza was having a hard time picking up Lopez’s offense which muted his own.

Barboza continued having issues picking up the punches from Lopez throughout the fourth round. Lopez’s hand speed continued to be the story of the fight through the fourth round.

In the fifth, Lopez began to unload on Barboza, and the straight right hand was finding a home and even buzzed Barboza once or twice. Barboza woke up in the sixth round, and when he landed a counter straight right hand, it immediately cut Lopez underneath the left eye while also creating an instant mouse. Barboza flurried a little, but the bell saved Lopez.

Things settled down in the seventh round as Lopez went right back to what was working: using smart movement and punch placement. Barboza appeared confused about what he wanted to do, which led to him not having a great round. Barboza was stuck in neutral in the eighth round, and his punch output wasn’t high. Lopez kept targeting his opponent’s body, which made Barboza take deep breaths.

Rounds 9-12 were all Lopez as Barboza could not find a way to figure out the puzzle that is named Lopez. Barboza’s corner also failed him by not having any sense of urgency through the championship rounds.
