The Terence Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) vs. Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs) showdown in September is undoubtedly one of the most highly anticipated fights of the year. While Crawford is coming in with an unbeaten record, the fact that he is facing a bigger and stronger Alvarez has divided opinions on how the fight would end. However, Crawford’s former opponent, Jeff Horn, believes that he has a chance to dethrone the formidable Alvarez.
Talking to FightHubTV, Horn divulged how Crawford could use his impeccable skillset to gain the upper hand against the bigger Alvarez.
“I think Crawford is going to use his great defense and clip Canelo every now and again. I feel like the fight goes to a decision. It’s going to be a stoppage early, where he just tries to batter Crawford because of the size difference, or Crawford outsmarts him in there. He clips him and tires him out and potentially stops Canelo later in the light like he did with myself,” he said.
Horn faced Crawford in 2018, where he lost via a devastating 9th-round TKO and forfeited his WBO welterweight title. And now seven years down the line, it is worth pondering if he can recreate the same magic, albeit against a larger Alvarez.
While there is no denying that Crawford will land shots on Alvarez, the knockout ability behind those punches is one that raises a few questions.
“He’s (Crawford) got super accurate shots, and if he’s able to weather the storm early from Canelo, if that’s what his strategy is, that could tire him out. That could allow a window for Terence Crawford to start seeing if he’s able to pick the holes and land the good shots. He could certainly tire Canelo out and stop him later in the fight. It’s definitely possible,” he said.
Meanwhile, many believe that Alvarez will be the one who will emerge victorious in the fight. With the host of predictions and speculations rising, trainer Pedro Roque revealed the only scenario when Canelo might potentially lose. “Canelo will win as long as he wants. He’ll only lose when he decides to retire,” he said.
