While Terence Crawford built his legacy in the boxing ring, his son, Terence Crawford Jr., secured his own piece of Nebraska sporting history this past weekend.
The elder Crawford—the undefeated, three-weight undisputed champion who retired in December last year after a historic victory over Canelo Alvarez—was seen cheering from the stands at the CHI Health Center as his son captured the Class A 106-pound title.
Competing as a freshman for Omaha North High School, Crawford Jr. (36-6) entered the state tournament with high expectations, as he faced Riley Pedersen in the finals. Crawford Jr. took control from the opening whistle. He secured a 13-1 major decision, never allowing his opponent to find a rhythm. The young athlete finished the tournament with a 4-0 record, including two pins and a technical fall leading up to the final.
“It feels great. I came here and I had to do what I had to do. I just had to be dominant out there… I expect what I train for so if I know I’m training hard and I’m training harder than everybody else, then the results will show,” Crawford Jr. said
The victory marks a transition for the Crawford family. With Terence Sr. officially retired and having vacated his final world titles in December, the focus has shifted to the next generation. At just 14 years old, Crawford Jr. has already matched one of his father’s rare feats.
