'Thos scorecards were ridiculous,' 92-year-old Bob Arum goes off at judges after controversial loss of ex-undisputed champion
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Top Rank CEO Bob Arum has been promoting boxing fights since the 1960s. Even at 92, Arum seems to have not lost the vigor he had in his youth. Arum recently bashed the judges after Josh Taylor lost a light welterweight matchup to Jack Catterall .

Taylor fought Catterall in the rematch of their first encounter, and the former won via split decision. At the First Direct Arena, Leeds, England, Catterall defeated Taylor by a unanimous decision. The scorecards read 117-111, 117-111, and 116-113. Arum felt the decision was wrong and went off at the judges.

Those scorecards...were an absolute disgrace...I will never, ever allow an American fighter to come here with this British board scoring the fight. Bob Arum via the post-fight interview

Despite Bob Arum’s criticism, the overwhelming section of the boxing community felt Catterall won the fight. However, nobody had Catterall winning by a wide margin. Even though the British boxer started the fight strong, the American had done enough in the latter rounds to make it close.

No titles were on the line in this fight. When they first fought, Taylor was the undisputed light welterweight champion. However, he vacated three titles and lost the WBO title to Teofimo Lopez. The loss against Lopez was Taylor’s first defeat in professional boxing. Similar was the case for Catterall when he first fought Taylor.

Josh Taylor speaks on his controversial loss to Jack Catterall

Boxing’s light welterweight division has been shrouded in controversy, mainly due to Ryan Garcia‘s infamous doping violation after he won against Devin Haney. Even though Garcia won the fight, the majority decision scorecard was also controversial.

Scorecards became controversial again at light welterweight as Josh Taylor lost to Jack Catterall via a wide unanimous decision scorecard. Bob Arum went off at the judges, but Taylor responded much calmer than his promoter.

I thought I just nicked the fight to be fair. Thought I just nicked it. It was a close fight, but given the controversy in the first fight, I think that probably played it in the judges' hands. Josh Taylor via the post-fight interview

Nevertheless, Taylor applauded Catterall for the victory. Since they are 1-1 now, Taylor urged Catterall for a rubber match to decide the decisive winner. Since Issac Cruz , Devin Haney, Teofimo Lopez, and Subriel Matias – the champions in the division, have business elsewhere, a third fight with Taylor seems like a good option for Catterall. Due to the controversial scorecards, the USA might be the location for a potential third fight.
