Tyson Fury Might Lose Almost Half of His Oleksandr Usyk Rematch Purse

The rematch might not have been a good financial decision for Tyson Fury (34-1-1, 24 KOs).

‘The Gypsy King’ will soon face the Ukrainian powerhouse Oleksandr Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) for what is undoubtedly a highly anticipated showdown at Riyadh Season’s Reignited. While both fighters are set to receive impressive purses, it looks like Fury is set to lose nearly half of his earnings after the fight.

The fighters are splitting a fight purse, which is said to be valued at $189.66 million. Usyk will get the lion’s share from this money cauldron, with sources putting their estimates at 60 percent. Fury, on the other hand, is set to earn around $75 million. However, he is also looking at a potential tax bill of almost $36 million.

According to data analyst JeffBet, under the United Kingdom’s tax regimes, almost 47 percent or $35,642,031 of Fury’s purse will go to His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. Moreover, $1,519,858 will be cut for National Insurance.

In the words of a JeffBet spokesperson, a citizen of the UK has to inevitably pay taxes on overseas earnings. “That remains the same no matter how much someone might earn. Good tax advice is always important, and in this case, you can be sure the Fury camp will have looked at an agreement that would be the most beneficial,” they said.

“This Is About Redemption”

Boxing purses aside, hushed tones across the boxing community constantly talk about how the fight is Fury ’s chance at retribution. After witnessing the recent face-off, former British boxer Darren Barker is certain that Fury is in no way “playing or messing around” this time.

“This is about redemption. What can he do this time? Can he inflict pain? Will he inflict hurt? Will he back up his words? It is such a good fight,” he said while talking at DAZN Boxing’s Open Workouts.

Additionally, he was also in awe of how cool and collected Usyk looked. “Very relaxed and on good form. This is one of the things I’m interested in,” he said. “Is he going to do exactly the same as last time and dominate, and not leave Fury alone? Will Fury allow that to happen that again? We’ve got the best seat in the house.”
