Daniel Blancas returns to the big stage on May 2. He will fight at T-Mobile Arena, the largest venue in Las Vegas outside of Allegiant Stadium. This is a significant achievement for someone who began training at the United Community Center on Milwaukee’s south side. Moreover, he still trains there. His journey in the sport of boxing has been remarkable.

Blancas has competed at this level before, and two moments from those nights stand out as highlights in his boxing career.

“The atmosphere is amazing,” Blancas said recently. “Just watching through the tunnel leading into the boxing ring, your mind is just everywhere. You’re feeling a bunch of emotions.”

“Especially because at the end of the day, it’s just you and your opponent in the ring. It’s just myself and them fighting. Honestly, you’re excited. You’re anxious to get in the ring for boxing.”

If all goes as planned, as it has in his 14 previous fights, Blancas experiences what he values most in boxing. He values the sense of accomplishment that makes the hard work and challenges worthwhile.

History of Daniel Blancas

Blancas is the son of Ignacio, who boxed in Mexico before moving to the United States and now helps train him. He is also the grandson of a dedicated boxing fan. Daniel is the oldest of three brothers: Aldo, 19, who made his professional debut in March, and Mateo, 9.

Blancas began boxing at age 8, inspired by champions Julio César Chávez and Juan Manuel Marquez. He has continued training ever since.

Around age 15, after success in amateur tournaments, Blancas decided to pursue boxing professionally. Later, he won a championship for Team USA at the 2017 Junior Olympics.

Now in his fifth year as a professional, the 6-foot-3 super middleweight known as “Ice Man” holds a 14-0 record with seven knockouts in his boxing career.

Blancas’ next and most significant fight is a scheduled 10-round bout against Raul Salomon (16-3-1, 14 KO). Salomon has recently competed as a light heavyweight in the world of boxing.

The fight is part of the undercard on a night headlined by the WBO cruiserweight title fight between two-class champion David Benavidez (31-0), the challenger. Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (48-1), both prominent figures in boxing, will also compete.

Blancas connected with Benavidez a few years back. He became one of about a half-dozen boxers considered part of his team. Notably, their shared experiences revolve around boxing training and bouts.

This relationship has provided valuable training and sparring opportunities. In addition, it has given Blancas chances to compete on the undercard at some of the nation’s most prestigious boxing venues.

Blancas has never fought professionally in Wisconsin. The limited opportunities available often conflicted with more prestigious boxing events elsewhere.

Although he spends only a few months at a time in Milwaukee between training camps, Blancas is proud of the boxing fan base he has built in his hometown.

This will be Blancas’ sixth fight in Las Vegas. It will also be his second at T-Mobile Arena as part of his ongoing boxing journey.

“I feel really, really blessed because it’s been a long journey,” he said. “Now that I’m able to fight here in Las Vegas, especially on the big stages – like T-Mobile Arena, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay; I fought in all those spots – that’s a dream come true for me and for a lot of boxers growing up, because that’s where the big boxing matches have always happened.

“Being part of boxing history and experiencing these moments sometimes feels unreal.”

Coincidentally, the same weekend as Blancas’ fight with Salomon, BMB promotions has a Cinco de Mayo program scheduled for Memorial Hall in Racine with amateur boxing on May 1 and professionals on May 2.
