Oleksandr Usyk has revealed his sons’ plans for life after his boxing career, as his two sons hope to continue his legacy in combat sports.
Usyk is preparing for the Undisputed Heavyweight Championship on July 19, knowing a win over Daniel Dubois makes him undisputed at heavyweight for a second time. Usyk is a two-weight undisputed champion, having also achieved this at cruiserweight, as the undefeated boxer will go down as one of the best ever. The Ukrainian has said he will fight once more after Dubois, but it appears his sons are next to carry the family name.
Usyk stated that his two sons, Mykhailo and Kyrylo, want to become world champions in their respective sports. One has plans on becoming an Olympic champion in judo. Usyk did win a gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics in boxing. Meanwhile, Usyk’s youngest son wants to become a world championship boxer. Usyk stated that he was away for three months from his wife for the Dubois fight, showing the mass sacrifice that is required to make it at the top level.
“It’s always been very difficult to be away but I always keep in mind that I have to be focused on training and I chose this path to be who I am now. Sometimes we have to give away things to get even better things. And sometimes it’s the people that are around us, that are closest to us, they pay the price for us. I’m always calling my wife early in the morning when our young daughter wakes up, she always wants to see her daddy.
“It’s always in the morning and evening, sometimes even in the lunchtime when there’s a break and I have time for it. I chose this path and sometimes you have to give away something to get something. When I was very little my family was quite poor and sometimes there would be no money to even buy some bread. Now I’m working so hard so my kids will have not just bread but butter,” Usyk said
