Derek Chisora’s final fight is in the offing as we look at where he could go next.
Chisora became the IBF Interim Heavyweight Champion after beating Otto Wallin in a unanimous decision. It was his third straight win after victories over Gerald Washington and Joe Joyce. That has taken his record to 36-13-0, leaving him with one more fight. A fight with Daniel Dubois is out of the question for now since he faces Oleksandr Usyk next for the Undisputed Heavyweight Title on July 19. Chisora has already faced Usyk, losing a unanimous decision, while the Dubois fight would be a mega domestic bout. Chisora could target the winner, but the timeline means he may have to wait.
Alternatively, there is Joseph Parker. Parker is on an incredible run of form, having beaten Deotay Wilder, Zhilei Zhang and Martin Bakole in his last three fights. Parker secured the WBO Interim Heavyweight Title after the Bakole win. He could either wait for the winner of Usyk-Dubois or face Chisora in the meantime. Parker has beaten Chisora on two occasions, giving the latter a reason to run things back.
Equally, there is the Fabio Wardley fight. Wardley is the WBA Interim Heavyweight Champion, who knocked out Justis Huni in his last fight. Wardley was getting outboxed before a right hand in round nine ended proceedings. Wardley is 19-0-1, with 18 knockouts to his name. That makes him a dangerous opponent, as he put Chisora on notice, telling him to ‘give me a call.’
While there has been speculation over the Anthony Joshua fight, the latter is currently recovering from elbow surgery. He may not want to take on Chisora for his first fight back, especially if Chisora has it as a farewell one. A loss to Chisora would damage his world title aspirations, but a win puts him in a mandatory position. Either way, Chisora says his future will become known soon.
