What’s Next For Edgar Berlanga?

Edgar Berlanga suffered his second loss after Hamzah Sheeraz stopped him in the fifth round, raising question marks over his future.

Berlanga arrived into the fight full of confidence. He had just stopped Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz in his last fight, which was the perfect response to his first loss, which came against Canelo Alvarez. Berlanga had eyes on securing the Canelo rematch, but the Sheeraz loss has damaged hopes of that.

Options

Berlanga could now target a fight with the former IBF Super Middleweight Champion Caleb Plant. Plant is also coming off a defeat in his last fight, losing to Jose Armando Resendiz. Plant and Berlanga have bad blood, having exchanged verbals at the Canelo-Berlanga presser. Plant had a verbal altercation from the crowd, while Berlanga was speaking with Canelo. With no other big fights out there on the horizon, the pair could face off, with the winner throwing their name back into the conversation for the biggest fights.

Another option is to face off against Jermall Charlo. Charlo made his debut in the 168-pound division in his last fight, with a stoppage win against Thomas LaManna. That was his first win since his 2023 victory against Jose Benavidez Jr. as Charlo has not been the most active boxer. The former WBC Middleweight Champion has only boxed six times since 2019. However, Charlo still has plans on facing the big names, as a win over Berlanga opens up the chance to chase a belt in a second weight class.

There is also the outside chance of a fight against Demetrius Andrade. Andrade is a two-weight world champion, having won belts at 154 and 160 pounds. He has not been in the ring since his first loss, which came against David Benavidez in 2023. Andrade has not announced his retirement, as the American is still a big name. And with a 32-1 record, it gives Berlanga the chance to get a huge win on his resume. Either way, Berlanga must win his next fight.

Berlanga Reacts

“Last night didn’t unfold the way we trained for, prepared for, or envisioned. It was a tough loss — one that felt surreal in many ways. No excuses will be made. We take full accountability, and with that, we also take the lessons. I want to congratulate Team Sheeraz for the victory. In defeat and Victory we remain humble no matter what. Boxing is as much mental and spiritual as it is physical.

“Some nights test everything inside of you — and this was one of them. Though this moment is heavy, we know it’s not the end. It’s a turning point. We thank God for His continued grace, even in defeat. We thank our team for standing strong. And to our supporters — your unwavering belief does not go unnoticed. This journey is far from over. We’ll take the time to reflect, recalibrate, and return with clarity, hunger, and focus. We will be back soon,” Berlanga said
