What’s Next For Jamie Munguia?

Jamie Munguia defeated Bruno Surace in their rematch, raising question marks over his next steps.

Munguia lost the first fight in an upset stoppage defeat, which was just the second loss of his career. It was a massive setback since he had recently signed with Top Rank to rebuild after suffering his first loss to Canelo Alvarez in what was his final fight with Golden Boy Promotions. For this rematch, Munguia was training alongside Canelo, which ultimately paid off with a better performance.

Munguia’s Options

Munguia could face off against the former IBF Super Middleweight Champion Caleb Plant. Plant will face Jose Armando Resendiz in his next fight in May. He bounced back from his loss to David Benavidez with a win over Trevor McCumby. While Plant did stop McCumby, he did show some chinks in his armour. Plant is a big name, having also failed faced Canelo and Anthony Dirrell, with a big fanbase.

Alternatively, Munguia could box against Jermall Charlo. The latter has not boxed since beating Jose Benavidez Jr. in 2023. That was his first fight in over two years since he came back to the sport after mental health struggles. Charlo will box Thomas LaManna in his next fight in May. He is the former WBC Middleweight Champion, and he is undefeated, making him a credible test.

Equally, Munguia could take on against Edgar Berlanga. The latter came back stronger following his first loss to Canelo. Berlanga stopped Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz in his last fight, as he has spoken about his desire to rematch Canelo. A win over Munguia may take him closer to that since it is a big-name win. Munguia has also previously said he would be open to making that fight. Munguia must consider the right move if he wants to get back into big-time boxing.
