What’s Next For Jermall Charlo?
Sarah Stier-Imagn Images

Jermall Charlo defeated Thomas LaManna, raising question marks over his next steps.

Charlo secured his first win at super middleweight having moved up from 160. It was his first win since the 2023 victory against Jose Benavidez Jr. Charlo could now target the following fights. The first name on the list could be Caleb Plant. The duo had an altercation after the Terence Crawford vs. Errol Spence Jr. weigh-in. Plant slapped Charlo after he accused him of disrespecting him in front of his wife, having pulled his beard. However, Plant has just beaten Jose Armando Resendiz, meaning the fight may not be as big.

“I’m just looking to stay well-known and relevant. No more dark places and keep my head straight. I just want to encourage everyone in the world, keep God first, keep God first. I was so focused on this fight and getting this out the way. They [Plant’s team] know what it is, they know where I’m at. I want my lick back, they know what’s going down,” Charlo said

Alternatively, Charlo could target the Canelo fight. Charlo was linked with the fight, only for his brother Jermell Charlo to get it. Charlo had moved up two weight classes from 154 in a one-sided unanimous decision defeat. Jermall has now had a fight at 168 while also having boxed at 160, making the transition much easier. There are also suggestions that Canelo is on the decline after his dull-inspired win against William Scull in a fight that produced the lowest number of punches landed ever, as per CompuBox.

Equally, Charlo may face off against Edgar Berlanga. Berlanga has been in the ring with the biggest names, as he suffered his first loss when he faced Canelo. While Berlanga wanted the Canelo rematch, Scull got the chance. Berlanga will now face Hamzah Sheeraz in his next fight. If Berlanga were to come out on top, he could face Charlo for the right to face Alvarez. Either way, Charlo is looking for the biggest names.
