Mikaela Mayer made history by becoming a three-weight world champion, beating junior middleweight Mary Spencer in a unanimous decision: 100-90 98-92 and 98-92.
Mayer was making her debut at 154 pounds, but controlled the fight to pick up the WBA, WBC and WBO belts. She was coming up from 147, where she had defended her WBO Welterweight Title, as the win gives her plenty of options.
“I think the most important thing is that I have options. I cleared my head after a tough two years. I’d love to do both, go down to 147 to become undisputed and defend at 154. I think I’m a natural 147-pounder. … I can do both,” Mayer said
Mayer could take on the IBF Junior Middleweight Champion Oshae Jones. A win makes her undisputed at 154, following in the footsteps of some of the greatest females out there; namely Claressa Shields. Jones is undefeated with a 9-0 record, but with only 3 KOs to her name, Mayer will fancy her chances of competing at the higher weight.
Alternatively, Mayer could move back down to 147 to Lauren Price for undisputed. Price has the remaining belts, WBA, WBC and IBF titles. Price is coming off her biggest win, beating Natasha Jonas in March. That extended her record to 9-0. Price has an extensive amateur background, having won an Olympic gold medal. However, Mayer has taken on British fighters, that being Jonas, even though she came out second best in a fight where many had her winning.
Another high-value option for Mayer is a rematch with her bitter rival, Alycia Baumgardner, who handed Mayer her only professional loss in a disputed split decision in 2022. Baumgardner is the current Undisputed Champion at Super Featherweight (130 lbs), the division where Mayer was formerly a unified champion. Mayer has already expressed a strong interest in making this rematch happen, suggesting they could meet at a 140-pound catchweight to split the difference between their current divisions. Either way, Mayer has plenty to consider.
