The UFC co-creator wasn’t the only one who found the ‘Fight of the Century’ a letdown.
Mayweather and Pacquiao had already crossed paths several times over the years before finally agreeing to meet in the ring.
It was a bout people had talked about for years, with fans often wondering what would happen if two legends like Mayweather and Pacquiao ever shared a ring.
Their 2015 fight was billed as one of the biggest events in boxing history, but it didn’t exactly live up to expectations. Mayweather won by unanimous decision, but there was plenty of backlash after the final bell.
Plenty of fans walked away from that night feeling short-changed, something even Mayweather himself couldn’t ignore.
Talk of a Floyd Mayweather return to the ring has picked up again, this time with Manny Pacquiao as the opponent – a decade on from their first meeting.
Mayweather hasn’t fought professionally since beating Conor McGregor in 2017, and there’s little appetite for a rematch given how forgettable their original encounter was.
The bout may have been billed as the ‘Fight of the Century’, but it fell well short of expectations, dragging through 12 cautious rounds with neither fighter taking many risks.
Campbell McLaren spoke to Bloody Elbow about his direct exchange with Mayweather after the fight, where he made his disappointment clear. The UFC co-creator also touched on how Mayweather wasn’t known for thrilling fights despite his huge following.
“Floyd Mayweather was a great boxer but I’m not sure he was the most entertaining boxer,” McLaren said. “In fact, when I saw him fight [Manny] Pacquiao, I went to the fight of the century and I know Floyd a little bit, I’d done a TV show with him.”
“I saw him later after the fight of the century and I went up to him and I go, ‘Floyd, can I get my money back because that really wasn’t the fight of the century.’ He got pretty angry but he wasn’t going to hit me or anything because he’s professional and he gets paid to hit people.”
As talk of a rematch between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao picked up again, there was one thing people still wanted to know.
If this is actually in the works, what happens to the exhibition against Mike Tyson that had been discussed for 2026?
Tyson recently shared an update on his plans, saying he expects to return to the ring next March in Africa.
The former heavyweight champion will be stepping back into action for the first time since his defeat by Jake Paul in November 2024.
