Will Canelo Alvarez Vs. William Scull Flop On PPV? – ‘Not Going To Watch’
EFE

Canelo Alvarez vs. William Scull’s fight is struggling to generate a lot of buzz.

Canelo has his first fight in Saudi Arabia as part of his four-fight deal with The Kingdom. He takes on Scull on May 3, knowing that a victory would make him the Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion for the second time. The PPV will cost US fans $59.99. Canelo enters the fight with a unanimous decision victory over Edgar Berlanga. He faced Berlanga after failing to face his mandatory, who was Scull at that time, as the IBF stripped him of the belt.

The fight has struggled to gain momentum, primarily since boxing fans were hoping to see the David Benavidez fight. The Mexican Monster recently moved up to 175 pounds after failing to get the Canelo fight. He is currently the WBC Light Heavyweight Champion, as Benavidez’s focus may now be elsewhere. Canelo’s fight against Berlanga still sold 650,000 PPVs, generating a live gate of $17 million. While the Scull bout is a historic fight as a Canelo win sets up a Terence Crawford fight in September, boxing fans have not been entirely convinced.

Things have not been helped by other big fights taking place this week. Ryan Garcia has his first fight since his year ban after his Devin Haney no-contest, as he faces Rolando Romero on May 2. Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez also boxed on that card. Meanwhile, Naoya Inoue has his fight in the United States against Ramon Cardenas in a defense of his Undisputed Super Bantamweight Belt on May 4. With so many fights on offer, boxing fans are perhaps being more selective over what they choose, as Canelo vs. Skull has received criticism.
